1. Course Prefix. The first part of a college course code is simple: a series of letters indicating the course's general subject. This is the course prefix, and it's fairly intuitive. Tip: if you get stuck wondering what a particular set of letters means, compare several courses sharing the same prefix.
The first number refers to the department or area of the course; the second number refers to the specific course. For example, in the course designated 600:111 the "600" refers to the Department of Art and the "111" refers to the course. Courses numbered 0-99 are primarily designed for freshman and sophomore students.
Example: ENGL 1301. The first digit indicates the level of the course. (1 = Freshman, 2 = Sophomore, 3 = Junior, 4 = Senior, 5 = graduate) The second digit indicates the credit hour value of the course. (1 = 1-credit hour class, 3 = 3-credit hour class, 4 = 4-credit hour class)
A "section" is a group of students within a course.
There are standard formats that many colleges use to signify dates, levels and titles. Most college courses are identified by three to four numbers. For example, the first digit may indicate the class year, the middle two digits may identify the subject and the last digit may indicate the number of credit hours.
A course code is a combination of letters and numbers that you enter to enroll in your instructor's class. Each instructor has his or her own course code (or codes, if he or she teaches multiple classes).
MATH 1314 : College Algebra This course includes the study of linear, quadratic, polynomial, logarithmic, and exponential functions and their graphs; characteristics of other basic functions, graphing techniques, and operations on functions; systems of equations; and matrices.
Typically, a course code includes a letter or number for each specific department; a letter or number for each specific subject (i.e., American history in the history/social studies department OR biology in the science department.)
English 1302 builds upon what students learned in English 1301, emphasizing more complex research, analytical, and rhetorical skills.
Sections help subdivide students within a course. Sections are either courses that have been cross-listed into one course or sections can be created by you and students added to them.
Course titles provide readers with a brief, general description of the subject matter covered in the course. Accrediting and governance entities, other academic institutions, current and prospective students, prospective employers and a variety of other individuals outside of the University review course titles.
To locate your course's Canvas course number within the course URL (browser address), navigate to your course's homepage. For example, from your Canvas dashboard, click on a course name. On the course homepage, the course number will appear at the very end of the browser URL.
