4. Second year of the new format
The new handicapped leaderboard format is still in its infancy with this being the second iteration. Last season, Justin Thomas began the week with the lead, but he was supplanted at the top of the leaderboard by Rory McIlroy as he took the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup titles.

Having played over 60 events on the Senior PGA Tour back in the mid 90's, most courses would have a "advertised" tournament yardage of 6700 to 7000. There were some courses (Ojai, Griffith Park) where physical limitations prevented that type of yardage. This was true of some of the older traditional courses.

I was at the Champions event in Minnesota today, and noticed the "advertised" course length was over 7100. On 2 or 3 holes, they were not even using the back boxes, so I'm guessing the 7100 number was based on total max yardage.

Poses an interesting idea for a one-off tournament. Main tour and Seniors tour side by side, off their respective markers, playing their own flights and perhaps an overall which would not be as important. Remove all variables (pin placements and course prep always seem a touch more generous on the Seniors and LPGA tours) except course length.

Format: 2019–present
Beginning in 2019, the tournament adopted a new format in order to ensure that the winner would also be the FedEx Cup champion. Using a method similar to the Gundersen method in cross-country skiing, the player with the most FedEx Cup points leading into the tournament starts at 10 under par. Calamity Jane trophy
The Calamity Jane is a sterling silver replica of Bobby Jones's original "Calamity Jane" putter, that has been presented to the winner of the Tour Championship since 2005. In 2017, it was made the official trophy for the tournament. Each winner before 2005 has been awarded one retroactively.
Winner's exemption reward
From 1998 to 2018, the Tour Championship winner, if not already exempt by other means, received a 3-year PGA Tour exemption. Since 2019, the Tour Championship winner has been directly awarded the FedEx Cup and a 5-year PGA Tour exemption.
