Nearly every college and university in the United States moved classes online this summer because of the coronavirus pandemic. Many have seen enrollment declines over last year. Old Dominion University, however, experienced a 13% increase in the number of classes taken in summer school.
Many dropped out because of financial reasons. Given the job market, may decide to finish their degrees. Recent unemployment numbers indicated that while the jobless rate was 15.3% for those only with high school diplomas, the rate is less than half that for college graduates - 7.4%.
There are virtual labs in subjects such as electrical engineering and chemistry. Nursing students work with patients in a clinic, hospital or doctor's office in their local area. In some cases, lab kits are mailed to students.
Adjusting to Technology#N#While every online college is slightly different, it is fairly safe to say that it will probably take you a few weeks to get used to the learning system. In most cases, you will have a classroom homepage that shows all of your scheduled assignments, tests, and homework due for the week, plus a list of other resources like eBooks, contact information, classroom chat forums, and other multimedia resources. It really is a whole lot to take in at first but the important part is that you do not let it overwhelm you; it does get easier. In fact, a lot of older students that have almost no computer literacy skills can usually be up to speed within 2-3 weeks…just give yourself a chance and contact your peer advisor whenever any questions arise.
Even though taking classes online is certainly not for everyone, a growing number of students are now realizing that it is hard to beat the relaxed standards and all of the extra time they have on their hands because of it. If you are unsure if distance learning is right for you, the best way to proceed is to contact an enrollment advisor at an online university that you are considering and ask to take an evaluation course within your intended field of study. Most college will allow you to attend the first 2-4 weeks completely free of charge and this is more than enough time for the average person to decide if it’s a good fit for their lifestyle.
I'm split between the two and I'm not really sure which to pick. If any mech engineering students from either schools see this can you tell me what it's like and why you chose. If you graduated already how easy was it for you to find a job? Thanks!
This upcoming fall semester will be my last semester at ODU and I need one extra class which will count as an elective to get me up to 120 credits. Can I take any 3 credit course or does it have to be specific to my major?
So can anyone tell me about the marine biology at ODU? Like what are classes like (what does it consist of)? Are there any opportunities for me to get any internship or jobs? Is it fun?? (Yes I do like math and science) Also what is the professor like? I just want help!
I am wondering about the availability of some courses needed to finish my degree in Accounting. I work full time, don't live near ODU and am also a mother with one on the way so in person classes simply aren't an option. There is one class in particular (ECON 301) I have tried for several semesters now to find online and hasn't popped up.
I just got accepted to grad school at ODU about two weeks ago. I met with my advisor a week ago and then registered for three summer classes. I was still debating about signing up for a fourth, but I'm nervous about the workload since I also have a FT job.
I only have one course to finish my BA in Accounting for the fall, but in order to be part time I need 6 credit hours. I'm looking for a filler online course to take that's not proctored. I used to be a psychology major so anything related to mental health/wellness or even something about queer studies would be pretty neat.
This page provides tips, suggestions, and resources on how to learn online and become a self-motivated online student. To succeed in this transition, we encourage you to concentrate on three areas:
Keep up with ODU’s COVID-19 updates, and be aware of student services offered online. Read university emails and communicate with your instructors if you have questions.
Your instructors are working hard to figure out how best to move face-to-face classes online. Expect ongoing changes as instructors and students adjust to the new learning environment. Be patient, flexible, and understanding, since some technologies or activities may not work as planned. Be helpful to other students, too.
