You learn by getting involved with the material and relating what you learn to real-life applications. Discussion topics, exercises, and other activities keep you engaged in the course and give you an opportunity to practice helping skills.

Adult Course

The adult Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone age 18 and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. The adult course is available in both English and Spanish.

How long is the MHFA online course?

The online course will last 3 days, with 6-8 hours of content each day. This is a live, interactive course taught by MHFA National Trainers. A full agenda will be provided once your registration is confirmed. Participants will complete approximately 2 hours of post-work 2-3 weeks after the live training.

How many hours of pre-work for MHFA?

Participants will complete approximately 8 hours of pre-work before the first day of training. Pre-work includes an online course that guides you through a series of MHFA modeling videos. This is a self-paced assignment that you can complete at your leisure prior to the course. You will receive it one week before your first day, with more instructions once you have confirmed your registration.

Do you need a degree to become a mental health instructor?

No specific academic or professional credentials are required for Instructor applicants. However, candidates should have knowledge of or experience with mental health problems (either personally, professionally or both), prior experience in training adult learners and a commitment and strategic plan to roll out Mental Health First Aid in the community.
