This is a continuation in the study of advanced statistical modeling techniques with a focus on categorical data. The course explores logistic regression, generalized linear models, goodness-of-fit, link functions, count regression, log-linear models, probability models for contingency tables, and ordinal response models.

Registration in Independent Study Courses A description of the activity must be developed by the student and approved by the supervising faculty member and the appropriate academic department authorized signatory. The student must complete an Independent Study Learning Contract and have approval prior to registration.
Taking an independent study can be more difficult than a traditional course because you have to keep yourself on track. Overall, independent learning is a critical skill for students to develop because it promotes creativity and intellectual curiously. We want our students to be active rather than passive learners. Instead of waiting to be told what to do, students can take ownership of their own learning.
Independent study is a form of educational activity undertaken by an individual student with little to no supervision. A student and their professor will generally agree upon a topic for the student to research with minimal instruction and guidance from the professor for an agreed upon number of academic credits.
The course is restricted to certain students, and you are not one of those students. There are many types of restrictions (Department, Major/Minor, Field of Study, Program, Level, etc). If you receive one of these errors, see the registration info page for the current term for more information on restrictions placed on statistics courses. If a restriction is temporary and will be removed, we will post there. The only way to know when a restriction has been removed is to check Enterprise Enhanced Registration regularly.
Course Explorer can be set to notify you of section status changes. You can check for space in cross-listed sections, which are the exact same course. Many STAT courses are cross-listed, and may have space still open in cross-listed sections. For example, STAT 400 is cross-listed with MATH 463.

Linear algebra is the main mathematical subject underlying the basic techniques of data science. Provides a practical computer-based introduction to linear algebra, emphasizing its uses in analyzing data, such as linear regression, principal component analysis, and network analysis. Students will also explore some of the strengths and limitations of linear methods. Students will learn how to implement linear algebra methods on a computer, making it possible to apply these techniques to large data sets. Credit is not given for both MATH 227 and any of MATH 125, MATH 225, MATH 257, MATH 415, or ASRM 406. Prerequisite: Assumes an introductory knowledge of Python, such as students acquire in STAT 107.
Topics will include: techniques of proof, mathematical induction, binomial coefficients, rational and irrational numbers, the least upper bound axiom for real numbers, and a rigorous treatment of convergence of sequences and series. This will be supplemented by the instructor from topics available in the various texts. Students will regularly write proofs emphasizing precise reasoning and clear exposition. Examines basic concepts and applications of graph theory, where graph refers to a set of vertices and edges that join some pairs of vertices; topics include subgraphs, connectivity, trees, cycles, vertex and edge coloring, planar graphs and their colorings. Draws applications from computer science, operations research, chemistry, the social sciences, and other branches of mathematics, but emphasis is placed on theoretical aspects of graphs. 3 or 4 undergraduate hours. 3 or 4 graduate hours. 4 hours of credit requires approval of the instructor and department with completion of additional work of substance. Prerequisite: MATH 347 or MATH 348 or equivalent experience or CS 374.
High school students (any persons 15 years of age or older who have never attended a collegiate institution) are eligible to enroll in self-paced and semester-based online courses to earn (depending on their institution) college credit, advanced high school credit, or both. In order to do so, however they must meet the following requirements and provide the necessary documents: 1 Evidence that he/she possesses the requisite background and ability to pursue profitably courses for which he/she is qualified 2 Written permission from high school guidance counselor or administrator upon enrollment 3 Cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 or better out of 4.0 (note: University Laboratory High school students: 3.0 or better out of 4.0) 4 Copy of official high school transcript upon enrollment
Individual colleges determine the latest date on which their students may register. A late registration fine of $15 (amount subject to change) is charged to students registering after 5:00 PM on the first day of instruction. The late registration fine may be waived upon petition. The late registration fine is not covered by scholarships or other tuition and fee waivers. Students registering only for courses that begin in the middle of the semester are not registering late, provided their registration is completed before the beginning of such courses.
