A COPE experience can be composed of initiative games, trust events, low-course activities, and high-course activities. Initiative Games – Initiative games can be used near the beginning of each COPE session to help participants learn to work together through communication and trust to achieve their goals.
Problem Solving: Project COPE challenges groups and individuals to develop solutions to interesting problems. Participants can then test their solutions and evaluate the results.
Communication: COPE encourages real learning of critical listening and discussion skills important for any group attempting to accomplish difficult tasks.
High-Course Events – A COPE activity is considered a high-course event if participants must be on belay. High-course events also tend to focus on individual initiative rather than group problem solving.
Teamwork: Teamwork is the key that allows a group to meet a COPE challenge successfully. The COPE experience makes it clear that each individual can accomplish more as a member of a team than by going it alone.
Prohibited: A few challenge course practices and procedures are prohibited because they have been determined not to be safe; they are described in the Belay On manual.
Decision Making: Project COPE requires groups to make decisions by developing one or more solutions to a problem, considering the available resources and alternatives, and evaluating the probable results.

What is ALP? The Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) is a form of mainstreaming developed at the Community College Baltimore County.
An important feature of ALP is the relationship that develops among the ten students, who take the two courses together, and also between them and the instructor, who teaches both sections.
Under ALP, students whose placement is in the upper level developmental writing course are invited to register for one of the designated sections of ENG 101. Participation in ALP is completely voluntary, and any student placed in the upper-level writing course, including those who barely made it into the course, is eligible These ALP sections of ENGL 101 have 10 seats reserved for ALP students, shown in green in the table above. The other 10 seats are designated for students whose placement is ENG 101, shown in blue.
As far as we know, ALP is the only mainstreaming program that places basic writers into a section of ENGL 101 along with students whose placement is ENGL 101. We think this is an important feature of our program. We do lots of group work in our writing classes, and we think it works much better in a section with some strong writers than it would in a section of all basic writers. We also think we ameliorate some of the stigmatizing effects when students are placed in a section composed completely of basic writers.
Amount of time spent in course should be equal to or greater than the credit hours granted for the course.
There is no time limit. You do not need to finish a course in a single session, and you may return to finish and/or review courses whenever you wish, even after completion.

The Accelerated Learning Program is focused on students who place into ENGL080 Reading/Writing II and is intended to both accelerate their progress and improve their success by mainstreaming them into an ENGL101 Composition I class when they also take the ALP support course, ENGL099. A student who elects to participate in the ALP program is placed into a designated section of ENGL101, which is composed of 9 ALP students and 11 students who placed into ENGL101. The 9 ALP students from two of these ALP ENGL101 sections are combined into one ENGL099 support class. All three courses (the two sections of ENGL101 and the ENGL099 section) are taught by the same instructor and are three credits. These units of three classes are called triads. Once a week, the ALP course meets in a computer lab.
ALP students save time: The support course runs concurrently with Composition I, so the students do not need to take a developmental semester before entering college-level work.

Effie Russell , Professor of English, presented on Accelerated Learning: Three Models for Student Success at the National Association for Developmental Education conference in National Harbor, Maryland on February 23, 2018.The presentation discussed the advantages and challenges of three different models of acceleration: the co-requisite model, the triad model and a model that places all ALP students together in a 101 course that offers more time and support. Attendees were encouraged to share their own ALP models’ challenges and rewards.
