The Italian course is made by in-house, paid, Duolingo staff. The Italian stories in Duolingo were translated by volunteers, or course contributors. There are currently five course contributors for the Duolingo Italian course.

One of my favorite ways to use Duolingo is to do “reverse trees.” This means that instead of doing English to Spanish, you could do Spanish to English. Even better, once you know Spanish, then you can use Spanish to get to your next language!
The level is determined by the amount of XP that you have in that language. Duolingo used to show your levels on your profile, but now only shows the amount of XP you have.
This happens when every topic in your tree has at least 1 crown.
A tree is basically all of the lessons that are available for the language course that you chose. Each lesson is divided into 5 “crowns”, which represents how well you know that specific topic.

They usually only exist in more popular courses, like the Duolingo stories. For example, I found them in my English to French course. There were spaces for bonus lessons like this:
Then you can scroll through all of the courses that Duolingo has available. Not every language is available from every language, but this is a cool way to get even more practice in the language!
If I personally wanted to learn and become fluent in speaking Portuguese fast, I would not recommend it.
There are many other Portuguese courses out there that will teach you to speak at a fluent level much better than Duolingo.
Here’s a bit of background information on myself to give you some context to this review.
Having spent 30 days (20 minutes each day) studying Portuguese with Duolingo, I did learn a fair amount of useful vocabulary, verbs, phrases and grammar points.
The Duolingo Portuguese course has 4 units with 91 different topics. Each topic contains 5 levels with between 2 and 6 lessons on each level.
The Duolingo Portuguese course was ok at teaching pronunciation but it could have been better.
The Portuguese language uses the Latin script which makes it fairly simple for English speakers to learn. All the letters are familiar, but you will just have to get used to pronouncing certain letters differently.
