Crash Course for Using an Eclipse Application This section is intended to get new Dakota GUI users up to speed on Eclipse terminology and concepts. If you have used Eclipse-based applications previously, you may skip this section. The Dakota GUI is built on the Eclipse platform.
An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object or spacecraft is temporarily obscured, by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer. This alignment of three celestial objects is known as a syzygy.
Eclipses happen because planets, moons, and other objects constantly move through space. For instance, Earth travels around the Sun in a path called an orbit. As Earth moves around the Sun, the Moon makes its own orbit around Earth. An eclipse involves three space objects temporarily lining up in a row.
A solar eclipse happens when the moon comes in between the sun and the Earth. As a result, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching the Earth's surface and casts a shadow on it. This occurs during the new moon phase.
eclipse, the moon blocks all or part of the sun. A solar eclipse would happen every month if the orbits of the Earth and the moon were perfectly circular and the moon orbited on the same plane as the Earth's orbit around the sun. However, the Earth's orbit and the moon's orbit are not perfect circles.
5 Ways to Teach Your Kids About a Solar EclipseMake a paper model. Buy some black construction paper along with some orange and yellow paint, and let your kids go to town creating the sun. ... Simulate the solar eclipse. ... Use detailed scientific facts. ... Play solar eclipse games. ... Read an eclipse book.
An eclipse is the result of a cause-and-effect relationship between Earth, the Sun, and the Moon. To cause a solar eclipse, the Moon has to move between Earth and the Sun. The effect of this alignment is that portions of the Sun are blocked and not visible on Earth for short periods of time.
An eclipse occurs when one object in space blocks an observer from seeing another object in space. From Earth there are two main types of eclipses: solar eclipses and lunar eclipses. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun causing a shadow to fall on certain portions of the Earth.
There are four types of solar eclipses: total, partial, annual and hybrid. Total solar eclipses happen when the sun is completely blocked by the moon.
Total solar eclipses are particularly important because they allow scientists to see a part of the Sun's atmosphere – known as the corona – that's too faint to see against the bright light of the Sun.

The way that these three views are arranged on the screen is called a “perspective.” In Eclipse, perspectives can be rearranged to suit your particular preference for how things should be visually organized. For instance, you may prefer to have the console above and the text editor below, or to move the project navigator to the right side of the screen.
A "launch configuration" is a template for running an external process (namely, the Dakota executable) through the Dakota GUI. This is the primary means of running Dakota studies in the GUI. There are two main types of launch configurations in the Eclipse world – “run configurations” and “debug configurations.” Debug configurations are not implemented currently in the Dakota GUI, so this user manual will focus primarily on run configurations.
The total eclipse begins in Nebraska southwest of Agate Fossil Beds National Monument at 11:46 a.m. MDT and passes out of the state 21 minutes later south of Falls City at 1:07 p.m. CDT. Wherever it’s viewed, the partial and full phases of the eclipse will take about three hours to complete.
The eclipse occurs on Monday, Aug. 21. Communities of all sizes in the path of totality have festivals, concerts and viewing parties starting the weekend before the big day. Here’s a glimpse into the shadowy plans of a few.
Alliance: One word: Carhenge. But there’s more: A pop-up planetarium, educational talks from astronomers, an Native American powwow, a cowboy fast-draw competition and the annual Toadstock music festival.
Beatrice: Homestead National Monument of America hosts NASA scientists, Planetary Society CEO Bill Nye, and science and astronomy programs led by the creator and a consultant for the PBS Kids program “Ready Jet Go!’’ Classic horror films will be shown at the Gage County Fairgrounds.
Broken Bow: With almost 150 seconds in totality — one second for each year of Nebraska statehood— the town is busting out with a street dance, a cowboy poet, barrel racing, bison ranch tours, free pork sandwiches on eclipse morning and a coop for watching chickens roost in the midday darkness.
Falls City: Two blocks of downtown will be closed eclipse day for “Dine in the Dark.” Restaurants will serve diners outside during the eclipse.
Gering and Scottsbluff: “Moon Over the Monument” includes a beer and wine festival, laser show and cultural dances.
