A starter shingle is used to seal with the field shingle at the first course along the eave and rake. This helps prevent wind and water from getting beneath the shingle in this critical location. The underlayment is a secondary water barrier if any moisture gets beneath the shingles.Sep 28, 2018

Three bundles to a square is most common, which applies to most three-tab strip shingles and some lightweight laminated shingles. Heavier three-tabbed shingles and laminated shingles require four, or sometimes five, bundles to cover a square.
The edge of the shingles should hang over a roof between an inch and an inch and a half — or between a half inch and three-quarters of an inch if drip edge flashing is installed. Too much overhang and the shingles could blow off in high winds; too little can allow water to seep into rake or fascia boards.
Once that's done, you're ready to install the first course of shingles. After installing drip-edge along the eaves, double the first course of shingles or, as shown, install a starter strip. The lower edge of the starter strip overhangs the drip-edge by 1⁄4 in. to 3⁄4 in.
The 7-in. line indicates the top of the starter course ; the 12-in. line indicates the top of the first course of shingles . Starter courses can be three-tab shingles with the bottom 5 in. cut off or a starter strip that comes on rolls in various widths.
You’ll cover the starter course with the first course of shingles. Running starter courses along the rakes isn’t imperative, but it’s smart because starters stiffen the overhanging shingle edges and create a cleaner sightline from below.
Still, trimming three-tab shingles is cheaper, so here’s a quick look at that method.
Starter shingles (also known as starter strips) are a key component to your new roofing system. A starter strip is an asphalt based shingle utilized to waterproof the eave and rake edges of your home during a re-roof. Take a look at your roof and you’ll see how the field roofing shingles are overlapped to create seamless flow ...
Factory starter is also a part of the GAF complete roofing system and required to qualify the roof for an upgraded warranty. Here are a few technical points for Pro-Start starter strips (from GAF website):
Adhesive tar strips help prevent shingle blow-off from harsh winds (along eaves as well). A straight line to properly orient each new row of shingles. Thicken the shingle layers sticking over the rake edge to help prevent drooping. Without starter strips or starter shingles, water will likely penetrate your roof edge.
Without starter strips or starter shingles, water will likely penetrate your roof edge. A good underlayment, like GAF Tiger Paw synthetic hybrid underlayment goes a long way to reducing damage. But it is only a secondary layer of protection that functions robustly when the water that reaches it is a low enough quantity.
When having a new roof installed on your home you will need to verify that your roofing contractor has included all of the critical components, other than shingles, of the roofing system in your contract price. Some contractors will offer you a very appealing price but in the end they have removed some of the most critical components ...
But along the eave line, roofing shingles come to an edge and can’t be overlapped. To prevent water penetration, we install starter shingles or starter strips. Where the shingles on the eaves butt up against each other, these starter strips provide the overlap function.
Starter shingles act as a barrier for your roof to protect your eaves and rake edges from water leaks. Mainly, starter strips provide the overlap function so that water can flow seamlessly on your roof without penetrating into your home.
Depending on the manufacturer, this is around 33.33 lineal feet.
For example, if a bundle of 10 shingles is equivalent to 60 meters/linear feet of coverage, you can use the total length of your eaves and rake edge to see how much you’ll need for the installation. Finally, make sure that the joints of your starter shingle are not coincidental with the joints of your finished shingle.
Installing a starter strip on your roof edges (over underlayment and/or ice and water shield) will also have a tar adhesive strip to prevent your shingles from blowing off in harsh weather conditions.
Without this starter course of shingles, your roof will lack the foundation needed to prevent water leaks and uplifts from strong winds. The most vulnerable parts of your roof that lack starter strips would be your eaves and rake edges.
Some manufacturers refer to starter shingles as starter strips because this also avoids confusion between a starter shingle and roof shingle. Starter strips also don’t have a specific color system, unlike roof shingles. Since your starter strip will be placed below your roof shingles, aesthetics don’t matter as much.
A starter shingle is normally a necessary component for all roofing warranties. Expenses like these can easily cost you $300 to $500 for a single replacement.
Pre-cut eave/rake starter strips are one of the most overlooked parts of a roofing system! That’s because some roofing contractors try to use a cut-up 3-tab strip shingle as the “starter” course on your roof. Unfortunately, these cut-up shingles may not have properly positioned adhesive to help reduce the risk of shingle blow-off.
Unfortunately, these cut-up shingles may not have properly positioned adhesive to help reduce the risk of shingle blow-off. Pro-Start ® Eave/Rake Starter Strips are made with a high-quality, properly positioned adhesive applied at the factory to help prevent shingle blow-off.
Excellent Warranties: GAF offers increased wind coverage on many GAF Shingles when you use GAF starter strips with factory-applied sealant and follow special installation requirements. 1. Convenient: At least 50% more coverage per bundle (versus typical 3-tab shingles) means less to carry and handle on the roof.

For roof slopes of 2:12 up to 21:12 (16.67% or 9º up to 175% or 60º), each shingle must be fastened to the roof deck using a minimum of five fasteners, spaced as shown in Tables 11 and 12 .
