Because Cal Poly degrees are always granted for the term in which requirements are completed, additional requirements may vary, depending on the amount of time elapsed and on the major field, in order to reconcile the curriculum of an older catalog with current trends in the academic discipline.
The GPA is officially calculated at the time the student has completed graduation requirements and will be noted on the student's official transcript. The three honors categories are as follows: Summa cum laude – 3.850 Cal Poly cumulative GPA Magna cum laude – 3.700 Cal Poly cumulative GPA
Students must earn at least a 2.000 GPA in all three of the following: 1) all Higher Education units earned (all college-level work), 2) Cal Poly cumulative units earned, and 3) the major (the courses used to meet Major Courses, see the curriculum sheet; support courses do not count toward major GPA).
Students must demonstrate competency in writing skills (as described below). A senior project is required for all Cal Poly students (as described below). Extension credit or credit by examination may not be used to fulfill the residence requirements.
While most colleges consider a D a passing grade for pass/fail courses, some require a C. And pass/fail classes may not count toward major or general education requirements.
So, Is a D passing grade? The letter grade D is considered passing since it lies between 60-69%. Any grade that is above 60% is considered passing in college.

Students may not enroll in courses which have prerequisites without having successfully completed such prerequisites with the appropriate passing grade as designated by the offering department. If passing grade is designated as "C" or better, "C" is defined as 2.0 on a 4 point grading scale.
Definitions of Letter Grades C (Satisfactory): Performance of the student has been at an adequate level, meeting the basic objectives of the course. D (Passing): Performance of the student has been less than adequate, meeting only the minimum course requirements.
A failing grade will likely hurt your GPA (unless you took the course pass/fail), which could jeopardize your financial aid. The failure will end up on your college transcripts and could hurt your chances of getting into graduate school or graduating when you originally planned to.
