The tour began in 1929 and at various times the tournament players had attempted to operate independently from the club professionals. With an increase of revenue in the late 1960s due to expanded television coverage, a dispute arose between the touring professionals and the PGA of America on how to distribute the windfall. The tour players wanted larger purses, where the PGA desired the money to go to the general fund to help grow the game at the local level. Following the final major in July 1968 at the PGA Championship, several leading tour pros voiced their dissatisfaction with the venue and the abundance of club pros in the field. The increased friction resulted in a new entity in August, what would eventually become the PGA Tour. Tournament players formed their own organization, American Professional Golfers, Inc. (APG), independent of the PGA of America. Its headquarters were in New York City.
An organization called the PGA European Tour, separate from both the PGA Tour and the PGA of America, runs a tour, mostly in Europe, but with events throughout the world outside of North America, that is second only to the PGA Tour in worldwide prestige. Several other regional tours are around the world.
The PGA Tour's broadcast television rights are held by CBS Sports and NBC Sports, under contracts most recently renewed in 2020 to last through 2030. While it considered invoking an option to opt out of its broadcast television contracts in 2017, the PGA Tour ultimately decided against doing so. Golf Channel (which, since the acquisition of NBC Universal by Golf Channel owner Comcast, is a division of NBC Sports) has served as the pay television rightsholder of the PGA Tour since 2007. Under the contracts, CBS broadcasts weekend coverage for an average of 20 events per-season, and NBC broadcasts weekend coverage for an average of 10 events per-season. Golf Channel broadcasts early-round and weekend morning coverage of all events, as well as weekend coverage of events not broadcast on terrestrial television, and primetime encores of all events. On March 9, 2020, the PGA Tour announced that it had reached an agreement to renew its contracts with CBS and NBC, which expire after the 2021 season, through 2030, maintaining most of the existing broadcast arrangements.
For the 2020 season, the cut line was reduced to 65 plus ties and eliminated the 54-hole cut. In the event that the PGA Tour cannot guarantee four rounds of play, the PGA Tour can shorten an event to 54 holes. A 54-hole event is still considered official, with full points and monies awarded.
On the Korn Ferry Tour, a "reshuffle" refers to a reordering of the tour's eligibility list, which determines the players who can enter tournaments. The 2013 season, which was the last before the tour transitioned to a schedule spanning two calendar years, had 40 official-money events in 38 weeks, including three alternate events played the same week as a higher-status tournament. The other event that is considered part of the 2013 season is the biennial Presidents Cup, matching a team of golfers representing the US with an "International" team consisting of non-European players (Europeans instead play in the Ryder Cup, held in even-numbered years).

The PGA Championship's Match Play Golf Courses. When it was first played in 1916, the PGA Championship was a match-play tournament. And it stayed that way through the 1957 tournament, not switching to stroke play until 1958.
It's a lush parkland affair that's not too challenging so can be a great confidence booster. Riviera is a 71-par course, stretching 7,325 yards.
One of the most well-known PGA Tour 2K21 courses, Sawgrass is a very enjoyable 7,285-yard, par-72 home to the Players Championship. A verdant course across countryside, it features a bit of everything. On one hand, there's dangerous water, sand, and pine needle hazards; on the other, it has spacious fairways and greens. It's actually got some of the nicest in-between camera shots panning the landscape and the famous clubhouse too. The highlight is its island-green par-3 17th, which can make or break your round right at the end of it.
It's beautiful but also quietly deadly, with plenty of hazards close to target landing areas that can easily ruin your round. The 2nd and 3rd holes going across and alongside the watercourses are excellent, and balance the beauty and risk of great golf holes well.
So what is the yardage difference between the regular PGA Tour and Champions Tour course lengths, on average? I'm watching the Champions Tour guys light up the course at TPC Twin Cities on the Golf Channel....
Having played over 60 events on the Senior PGA Tour back in the mid 90's, most courses would have a "advertised" tournament yardage of 6700 to 7000. There were some courses (Ojai, Griffith Park) where physical limitations prevented that type of yardage. This was true of some of the older traditional courses.
I was at the Champions event in Minnesota today, and noticed the "advertised" course length was over 7100. On 2 or 3 holes, they were not even using the back boxes, so I'm guessing the 7100 number was based on total max yardage.
Poses an interesting idea for a one-off tournament. Main tour and Seniors tour side by side, off their respective markers, playing their own flights and perhaps an overall which would not be as important. Remove all variables (pin placements and course prep always seem a touch more generous on the Seniors and LPGA tours) except course length.

Weakness: One too many holes that are criminally narrow, especially amid windy conditions, which forces defensive golf at times with layups and bailouts the norm, rather than the exception. Too often, the penalty for taking a risk and failing far outweighs the potential reward.

The PGA Tour places a strong emphasis on charity fundraising, usually on behalf of local charities in cities where events are staged. With the exception of a few older events, PGA Tour rules require all Tour events to be non-profit; the Tour itself is also a non-profit company. In 2005, it started a campaign to push its all-time fundraising tally past one billion dollars ("Drive to a Billion"), and it reached that mark one week before the end of the season. However, monies raised for charities …

Three of the four majors take place in eight weeks between June and August. In the past, this has threatened to make the last 2+1⁄2 months of the season anti-climactic, as some of the very top players competed less from that point on. In response, the PGA Tour has introduced a new format, the FedEx Cup. From January through mid-August players compete in "regular season" events and e…
