There is no time limit to CPT, while full-time OPT is limited to one year. It is possible to do part-time OPT while still in the middle of a program of study, but most students are also eligible for CPT so it is very rare for students to apply for OPT before they complete their required semester hours.

CPT is authorized with the understanding that you will be working during the entire listed employment period, therefore it is best to limit travel to before or after your CPT dates. Before traveling outside the U.S. you should discuss your travel plans with your employer.
Other Characteristics of CPT: No employer sponsorship needed, but the application does require the employer to provide a CPT letter. Students must be enrolled full-time for one academic year before they can apply. CPT can only be used before a student completes their degree/graduates.

Q: Can I work at more than one job on CPT at the same time? Some students may want to do a combination of two jobs during the semester. This is possible, only if both positions are an integral part of an established curriculum. Students must follow the same instructions and obtain an authorization for each job.
CPT is authorized by a Designated School Official (DSO) at International Student Services (ISS). It may take ISS 15 business days to review and approve a student's CPT request. An F-1 student must request authorization from the school at which they are enrolled full-time with their F-1 I-20.
The only difference between full-time CPT and part-time CPT is the duration of the programme.
