You know (and envy) these dogs when you see them. Their coats flow and cascade with the glossy sheen of a model in a shampoo commercial. The Silky Terrier is a clear example, with his long, shiny blue and tan coat. Other silky coated dogs include the Yorkshire Terrier, the Afghan Hound, and the Irish Setter.
Want to help make your dog’s coat shiny and lustrous? Here are some tips: 1 Omega -3 and -6 fatty acids. High-quality commercial foods should have these in sufficient amounts. Home-prepared dog foods and lower-quality commercial foods might not. Supplements are available; they should show results in six to eight weeks. 2 Grooming. Brushing your dog frequently helps distribute natural oils throughout his coat. 3 Bathing. Finish off your dog’s bath with an oil-based conditioner or coat spray. Don’t go overboard with bathing, though—shampooing too often can strip the coat’s natural oils.
Double and Single Coated Dogs. Bernese Mountain Dog. When a dog has a double coat, it means he has an undercoat that is typically shorter than his outer coat, and his hair has a dense, woolly texture. And as the name suggests, single coated dogs have only one coat, without this undercoat.
They’re usually referring to the difference between a single coat and a double coat. A single layer of coat is sometimes called a ‘hair’ coat. It might grow long or stay short, cascade in waves or form bouncy curls, feel silky smooth or rough to the touch, but the hair all over the dog is basically the same.
A Rough Collie’s outer coat appears soft and fluffy (think Lassie), but actually feels harsh. This outer coat is weather-resistant, keeping wind and rain at bay. The coats of wire or broken coated dogs are also harsh to the touch and often classified as rough.
Some breeds change colors as they lose their puppy coats and grow in their adult coats. Dalmatians, for example, are born spot-free and grow in their spots with their adult coats.
No matter the length of their fur, single coated breeds often need to wear a dog jacket in winter because they don’t have the added insulation offered by an undercoat. Single coated dogs usually leave less fur on your clothes and furniture, which can make them easier on allergy sufferers.

It’s one of the only gundog breeds that doesn’t allow for black in the breed standard. They’re gorgeous, though, with a dense, wavy coat ranging from rich chocolate to dappled white and brown. German Longhaired Pointers have the unique ability to be both calm family dogs and fiery hunters, depending on the situation.
And not every dog within the breed will necessarily have a wavy coat along their back. And the first breed on this list are Golden Retrievers. These are a breed that I know very well as I have two of them. And both of them have wavy hair on their backs.
Golden Retrievers are adorable pups that come in all shades of gold (cliché, I know ). These silky smooth gundogs were bred to retrieve waterfowl during hunting parties. These Russian hunting dogs are the epitome of grace and regal elegance, all while running at a remarkable 35 – 40 miles per hour. Their long, luscious coats come in various colors, including black, white, brindle, fawn, cream, and red. These flat coats tend to be wavy or slightly curly.
These giant herding dogs are fiercely protective of their herds (both human and animal) and were bred to deter wolves and other predators in snowy European mountains. Their thick, white coats are waterproof and tangle- and dirt-resistant. Still needs a ton of grooming, though. These luxurious coats are either straight or slightly wavy. Never curly, though.
This cheerful, black or liver-colored retriever hailed from England and was initially bred to serve as gundog working both on land and in the water. The name is a bit of a misnomer, since their coats are generally wavy. Known as the kids of the canine world, these pups hardly ever grow up.
The gorgeous longhaired Dachshy has a whopping 12 recognized colors, including solid red or cream, and many two-tone combinations, like black and cream, chocolate and tan, and blue and cream.
Blues, purples and greens are considered cool colors. Reds, browns, and tan are warm colors. Black, white and grey are neutral. Your dog’s coat color will fall into either the warm or neutral color category. Once you determine the temperature in terms of cool or warm, shop for opposites in your dogs coat temperature.
Rule 1: Think Temperature. Does Your Dog Have a Warm Coat or a Cool Coat? Colors can be divided into cool, warm and neutral categories. Blues, purples and greens are considered cool colors.
There’s not too many colors a black-coated dog can’t wear. If you have a white dog, you have as many choices as you do with a black dog. Grey is neutral – you can go warm or cool with a grey dog, but you should pick something with contrast, which takes us to rule #2. Rule 2.
Even the extra-large Great Dane gets a sophisticated black-and-white makeover when you opt for the Harlequin variation of this breed. Known for his quiet, gentle approach to life, the Dane is a true people pleaser and is surprisingly good with kids and other animals. But don’t mess with his human pack or you’ll meet his protective side and when it’s nearing 200 pounds, it can be formidable. In spite of his large size, this pooch doesn’t need a lot of strenuous exercise – a few good walks throughout the day is enough to stretch his legs and keep him mentally stimulated. And in spite of what can appear to be an aloof nature, he’s really a softie when it comes to being with his family and doesn’t do well when left alone. Imagine a great big Newfoundland dog, but in black and white. Better still, blend in the super sweet and easy-going nature of the Newfoundland and you have a Landseer. But instead of solid black, you’ll find this pooch has a black furry head with white around the muzzle, a white body with black saddle markings. Just like his solid-colored kin, this big boy is a working breed that does well on land or water. In fact, he’s known to possess instinctive life-saving abilities when it comes to water rescues. His smart, super-patient personality makes him great for families with kids. Now you may not think that such a multi-talented dog would be sensitive, but he is. Boston Terrier. Natch we’re going to start with the “American Gentleman” of dogs, the Boston Terrier. While you may find this perky pooch’s sleek, easy-care coat also comes in a white/brindle mix, he is most readily identifiable when sporting his distinctive black and white tuxedo markings.

Stoutland the dog is the final form of Lillipup and Herdier, a dog-like Pokémon from generation V with an impressive dog-stache. However, you may not be surprised to learn that, like its younger stages, Stoutland isn’t all it’s cracked up to be in competitive battles.

Even if they do survive manufacturing, they have the tendency to become rancid in the dog’s food before they are consumed. For this reason, many turn to other options besides commercial dog food for supplementing their dog’s needs.
