Grade Option: Areas R, S, V, and Z must be taken for a letter grade. Second baccalaureate students who earned their first bachelor degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. are not required to take SJSU Studies unless specific courses are required by the major.
If more than one course is taken in any of the individual R, S, or V areas, then the highest grade in that individual area will be used to calculate the aggregate SJSU Studies GPA.

The difference is the College Composition exam has two essays graded by CollegeBoard and the Modular version may or may not have an essay attached (depends on the school). It depends where you attend school to determine if they'll take one over the other.

The California State University (CSU) junior-level writing requirement is known as the “Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement” (GWAR ). At SJSU, the GWAR is satisfied by (1) passing the Writing Skills Test (WST) or passing with a “C or better” the designated 100A course or by completing the WST Directed Self Placement exercise; and (2) passing with a “C or better” (C- not accepted) the designated 100W course.
A WST score of 11/12 earns a waiver of the SJSU 100W course requirement , with the caveat that a major degree program may require a 100W course as part of the major (see Major Exceptions in Catalog).
