While the main goal is to avoid failing a class in college, it could happen. Even if you do fail, you can retake the class and ask for help. Although it will negatively impact your GPA and could affect your financial obligations, you can bounce back.
*For spring 2020 classes only, students may repeat courses previously taken for a letter grade with the P/NP option. A passed or not passed grade would replace the previously deficient grade. BRIEF SUMMARY. Grade replacement refers to the process of repeating a course for credit. This means that the student takes the course for a second time. Grade replacement may be a way that students try to raise their GPA if they have experienced one/some low grades in high school.
If you earned a NP, you can take your repeat for P/NP or letter grade if both grading options are available. If you have repeated fewer than 12 units, the grade from the second attempt of the course will go into your GPA and the grade from first attempt will come out, regardless of which grade is higher.
Pass (P) grades require a level of performance at least equal to a letter grade of C- and will earn units, but no grade points. No pass (NP) grades represent a level of performance at a D+ or lower. No units or grade points will be earned.
The second grade always replaces the first grade. However, you can retake a class and get a worse grade. For example, if you have a D (a passing grade) and retake a course and receive an F (a failing grade), you now have a failing grade in the course and will have to take the class for a third time.Oct 31, 2021
The first thing you need to be clear about is that retaking classes (in most cases) has a minimal effect on your GPA, because retaken classes don't replace your low grades – they average in with them. Yes, your failed course will show up on your transcript because the registrar's office will get a copy of your transcript and decide whether to accept you or not (based on the cumulative average). You can't avoid the "fail."Oct 20, 2008
