In the old days, hard work, commitment, effort, dedication, and “following the rules” were how you succeeded. It worked, but it was very, very costly in all areas: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. However, in the new millennium, it is clear that smart people are no longer willing to suffer for success- not even a little bit. The answer? Strategies. Creative strategies. Customized strategies. Clever strategies. Strategies are the keys to success, no matter what the goal.
A strategy is ‘how’ you get something accomplished, whether you are doing the work, someone else is doing the work, or the strategy itself doing the work. People sometimes get strategies, plans, goals, outcomes, mission, purpose, vision, and action steps confused. A strategy is how something gets done, not just what you do.
In any personal or business situation, there are three elements: the person, the goal, and the strategy. I call these the who, the what, and the how.
And you have to learn how to craft, adapt, and synthesize them to fit your situation or that of your company or clients. Strategizing is a skill, and it is a skill that you can benefit from forever in your career, business, and in your personal life.
One of the most fascinating aspects of strategy is that the process of developing strategies is a highly creative one. True, you can use off-the-shelf strategies. But it is also important to be able to craft and customize strategies.
Strategy 1: Integrate New Online Learning Best Practices. In online learning, you don’t have the traditional elements of a classroom such as conversations, hand-on activities, and physical presence. These are the pieces that foster communication and encourage deeper learning.

When the course content doesn’t seem practical or realistic, learners will lose interest or fail to retain the information. For the learning content to be valuable, offer real-life scenarios and examples that allow learners to build a connection to real life. Additionally, they should be able to apply concepts immediately.
Why You Should Be Thinking About Engagement. Engagement is one of the key elements of knowledge retention in online learning. When you are engaging online learners, you are keeping them involved, motivated, and invested in the learning process. This cultivates a stronger connection between them and the learning goals.
Sequence of events. The learning content should be set to a pace that will not overwhelm learners but also won’t bore them. It should also follow a sequence of events that builds and reinforces knowledge. Storyboard your lessons and learning activities ahead of time to ensure your course is engaging.
Large chunks of information can be overwhelming and hard to digest. Breaking the course content into smaller ideas or topics can help improve comprehension. Microlearning has also been proven to increase engagement.
Assessments facilitate learning and help increase engagement. Similarly, asking questions throughout the course is a powerful tool to increase retention. Asking varied questions between modules or learning concepts reinforces the ideas presented. The questions should also provide an explanation when a learner answers incorrectly and should be linked to learning materials for reference.

These data will guide your selection of topics that you can emphasize in the class. When you remain open to your students’ input, you will increase their ownership and investment in the material. Ensuring that your students have an active role during class time and beyond closes the loop for making your course a personalized and meaningful experience.
