Good notes are brief and highlight only the core points that your instructor is trying to communicate. You should be able to, at a glance, summarize what your teacher was trying to say.
Sovereignty. Sovereignty refers to the concept that people get to rule themselves. There is a certain amount of power invested in a nation or country by which life within its borders is organized. Government exerts public power and enforces laws that allow order to be maintained in society.
Domestic sovereignty refers to the control over a country’s borders by an authority that exists within that country. Interdependence sovereignty refers to the authority exerted over movement between borders. International legal sovereignty exists when a country’s authority is formally recognized by other countries.
The concept of development refers to the process of growth in a country. Strategies are put together that are designed to improve the nation’s outlook. The tactics that country’s establish can include planning highways, water systems, the development of urban centers, improved agricultural processes, and higher quality amenities for people. Other examples of development can include planning for improved healthcare or communications access. In short, the concept of development has to do with the growth of a country. When researchers try to judge a country’s development, they look at mortality rates, employment rates, income levels, and other factors that indicate how much a country has improved the lives of its people.

The department faculty are teacher-scholars in the best tradition of the liberal arts. Each of our permanent faculty has a PhD in their field and has an active research program. Above all, they are dedicated teachers who engage their students inside and outside the classroom in learning and research using innovative pedagogy.
International Affairs majors have many co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities available to them. They participate in research and study abroad. They engage in the UMW community through clubs and organizations, volunteer in the Fredericksburg community, intern in Fredericksburg, Richmond and Washington D.C.

One of the great things about UMW’s liberal arts education is the ability to learn a variety of things. The first component is Political Science 3 , the only course required of all students in the major. PS 3 provides an introduction to the methods political scientists use to answer questions about politics.
Students must apply to the honors program, and to be eligible, they must have completed 90 units, find a faculty to sponsor their research, and have a GPA of 3.3 overall and 3.5 in the major at the time of application. Only 40 students are accepted into the honors program.

The one thing that I love about political science classes is that you have the opportunity to express your opinion. You have the right to say whatever you want, but you need facts to back up your statement. Expressing your opinions is a great way of showing people that there are topics you care about. You have the opportunity to tell people what you know and how you feel.
