Students may request a Withdrawal (with a W or NP grade) in MyUCSC by submitting a drop after the enrollment deadline. If a drop is submitted in MyUCSC after the add/drop/swap deadline and by the end of the sixth week of instruction (see the Academic and Administrative Calendar for deadlines), the course appears on your record with a “W” notation.

Dropping. While not as ideal as taking and passing a course, dropping a course has the fewest negative repercussions of the options included here. “A drop from the course is usually done early in the semester and has no impact on the student's grade, GPA or transcript,” Croskey says.
If you choose to drop a class after the drop deadline, it is considered “withdrawing” from a class. When you withdraw from a class, instead of having a grade on your transcript, it will be marked with a “W,” and according to the school policy, you may not get your money back that you had paid to enroll.
'W's on a transcript simply means you withdrew from a class after a certain date during the semester. And that date usually follows the last day you can drop classes without a grade. Make sure you know what date that is. One of the benefits of a 'W' is that it will not be calculated into your GPA.
It does not affect the student's GPA (grade point average). Although students may be reluctant to have a “W” on their transcript, sometimes “W” stands for Wisdom. Withdrawing from one class may make success in other classes manageable and allow your student to end the semester with a strong GPA.
Although the process for dropping a class varies by school, the adherence to strict deadlines is universal. If the deadline has passed, it is too late. Withdrawal deadlines are usually available in the school's academic calendar or on the registrar's website.
As mentioned above, in most cases it's OK to drop a class, especially if you haven't dropped a class before. Colleges understand that sometimes circumstances change, and having one dropped class on your transcript won't hurt your college applications. However, there are still some considerations to keep in mind.
How many W's is too many on a transcript? 1, or maybe 2, W's is generally okay, but >5 is a major red flag. This sends the message that when the going gets tough, you cut and run rather than tough it out & do what you need to do to succeed.
“Depending on what the students' educational goal is, [dropping with a W] could affect financial aid, it could affect their academic transfer and it could affect whether they're going to have a chain of degree or certificate.
If your school determines that your withdrawal from a class changes your student status, or impedes your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), they may reduce your financial aid for the current session or disqualify you from aid in the future.
All colleges offer a last day to withdraw where you can remove yourself from a class with a grade of "W" rather than a failing or otherwise low grade. Speak to your academic advisor about withdrawing from the class.
Federal regulations require you to repay a portion of financial aid funds if you withdraw from all classes before satisfying the 60 percent completion rule for the enrollment term. (See the current 60 percent dates for the financial aid award year.)
When a class is dropped, the grades do not appear on the transcript of the student. The whole class is removed. In a withdrawal, the grades appear as “WF” or “WP” on the transcript of the student.

The recoding is only applicable for classes that started within the first six weeks of the semester (February 18 through March 27), and if the drop occurred on or after March 4, the same day the Chancellor’s Office declared a COVID-19 emergency.
This recoding is not applicable to late start classes that experience an instructor-initiated drop “since students will now be aware the classes are taught using remote learning modalities,” according to Tovar. This includes classes offered Week 10-17 or 10-18.
In the announcement, Tovar warns that “ [taking] classes on a P/NP basis… can have deleterious effects on transferability and graduate school admission.” He also encouraged students to consult a counselor before changing to P/NP grading.
SMC also extended the deadline to request a Pass/ No Pass (P/NP) grading scale for classes to coincide with the Guaranteed Withdrawal deadline. The Guaranteed Withdrawal deadline is subject to each class and can be found on each student’s Corsair Connect account. The deadlines are set to the percentage of course that has been completed. The original P/NP deadline was set to the maximum allowed by law, which was 30% of the class. It is now set to the 75th percentile of the class’ length.
All instructor-initiated drops "EA's" (Excessive Absence ) through the 12th week or 75 percent of the class, whichever is less, will be assigned a "W".

A withdrawal from a class (W) is GPA-neutral: instead of a grade, you receive a W notation on your transcript which does not affect your GPA; you also don’t earn credits for the course. The class and W remain on your schedule and transcript; this allows you to remain in full-time status for financial aid purposes, but not for international students’ F1/J1 purposes. Once the W petition is filed, you stop attending the class and focus on your other classes.
International degree-seeking (F-1) and international exchange students (J-1) are required to be enrolled in at least 12 credits every quarter to maintain their F1/J1 status. Students must receive approval for a reduced course loadfrom International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) before a W or NP can be approved. If you are an international student, contact ISSSbefore requesting a W or NP. The form will be routed to their office for approval before a W/NP is applied to your record.
Requesting a W or NP does not affect financial aid for the current quarter, as long as you remain enrolled in and are attending/participating in some of your courses. However, it can affect your future financial aid if you do not maintain satisfactory academic progress. Keep in mind that if you withdraw or NP, you are not earning credits for the class and will likely need to make them up later. Financial Aid requires students to meet Satisfactory Academic Progressrequirements to remain eligible for aid. If you are following a detailed plan for a financial aid appeal, please consult with a financial aid adviser as this may affect your ability to continue receiving aid.
If you request a W or NP in a class with a required lab or other co-requisite, the W or NP will apply to both the class and the lab or other co-requisite. At the instructor’s discretion, you may choose to add one of the two back to your schedule through the Add By Petition process. You will be asked to indicate your grading option (graded or P/NP) on the Add By Petition form.
Detailed instructions for requesting a W or NP are here. Once processed, W or NP grades cannot be rescinded. If you’re unsure, contact your college academic adviser, who can support you in making this decision.
A W or NP in a course counts as an attempt and will remain on your record. University policy states that a course taken at UCSC may not be repeated more than once. If this is your first time taking the course and you plan on repeating the course in a future quarter, the next time will be your final attempt. If you are withdrawing or requesting a NP during your second attempt, you will not be able to take the course again at UCSC without approval from your college. This is especially important to note if the course you might not complete is required for your declared or proposed major. Meet with your major adviser for more information on repeating the course and major qualification or graduation requirements.
Withdrawing means you drop a class after the allowed add/drop period ends. You won’t receive a grade for the class, but a “ W ” will show up on your transcript, indicating that you were not doing well in the course and essentially quit the class.

Community Education classes are for personal enrichment and professional development. We offer both ground and online classes that support continuing education for those not looking for a degree. Our classes are short-term, not-for-credit classes and are non-transferable for academic credit . Some classes are open to students under 18 with permission of the instructor. SMC Community Education classes are not equivalent to credit classes and cannot be used to meet prerequisites in the SMC credit program. Some of our classes offer a certificate of completion, or prepare one to successfully pass an accreditation exam.
Currently, the minimum age to enroll in Community Ed classes is 17 years old, as most classes are geared towards adults. Occasionally, we will offer special classes specifically for children and teens
Bundy Campus Parking: For Community Education students, parking is free after 5:00 pm on Monday - Thursday, after 12:00 pm on Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday; no parking decal or permit is needed at these times.
Emeritus College: 1227 SECOND STREET (Parking is available in the City parking structure #2, located at the corner of Second Street and Wilshire Blvd. Parking is free for the first two hours, and $1 for each additional 1/2 hour until 6 pm.
Continuing education courses are designed for personal and professional development. Generally, adults taking continuing education courses are working toward a personal and professional goal, such as gaining a new workplace skill, advancing a career, or simply learning to stimulate intellectual growth.
While lessons include assignments and quizzes, they are not mandatory and will not impact your grade. The minimum passing score for the final exam is 65.
