In fact, a “D” is considered passing in both high school and college, as it's above 60%. While a passing grade may be as low as 60%, you will want to aim higher for many reasons. As a college student, you don't want to aim to barely pass a class.

At the initiation of the student or the instructor, an incomplete grade (I) may be assigned by the instructor when the student is unable to complete the course requirements within the official period of the course. An incomplete must be made up within one calendar year from the end of the course or the grade of "I" will be automatically changed to a failing grade for academic unit courses. For CEU courses, if an incomplete is not made up within one year, the course is deleted from the student's record.
Students wishing to audit a course must register and pay the same fees as students enrolled for credit. An auditor may be required by the instructor to participate in any or all classroom activities. The SFSU course repeat policy was developed in response to Executive Order 1037: Grading Symbols, Minimum Standards Governing the Assignment of Grades, Policies on the Repetition of Courses, Policies on Academic Renewal, and Grade Appeals. At the time the Academic Senate declined to authorize grade forgiveness, in which a new grade replaces the former grade in terms of calculation of the GPA. This policy addresses this omission. In addition, the original policy, developed before the implementation of Campus Solutions (CS), counted AU and W grades in the repeat count. As CS is not capable of counting AU and W grades for the purposes of course repeat counts, The Academic Policies Committee is recommending their removal from the policy.

Repeating More Than 28 Units. An undergraduate student cannot repeat any course once the student has repeated 28 units at SF State, unless the course is described in the current SF State Bulletin as repeatable for credit.
In this policy, “repeat” means to enroll in a course for which a grade has already been assigned. “Grade” refers to all grading symbols defined in CSU Executive Order 1037 (effective August 1, 2009). If you pass the deadline and then drop the class, it will result in a withdrawal, or a W on your transcript. While a W is not counted towards your grade, it isn’t optimal to have on your transcript. Furthermore, too many Ws could end up resulting in dismissal from the institution.

Credit by Examination. Credit by Examination is an option available only to undergraduate students. You may request to challenge courses because of special studies or experiences. A challenge consists of taking an examination on the course material rather than taking the whole class.

In 1887, Mount Holyoke College became the first college to use letter grades similar to those commonly used today. The college used a grading scale with the letters A, B, C, D, and E, where E represented a failing grade.
Meanwhile at Harvard, students were graded based on a numerical system from 1-200 (except for math and philosophy where 1-100 was used). Later, shortly after 1883, Harvard used a system of "Classes" where students were either Class I, II, III, IV, or V, with V representing a failing grade.
Letter grades provide an easy means to generalize a student's performance. They can be more effective than qualitative evaluations in situations where "right" or "wrong" answers can be easily quantified, such as an algebra exam, but alone may not provide a student with enough feedback in regards to an assessment like a written paper (which is much more subjective).
As such, although there are other high schools such as Sanborn High School that approach grading in a more qualitative way, it remains to be seen whether such grading methods can be scalable. Until then, more generalized forms of grading like the letter grading system are unlikely to be entirely replaced.
APUS Grading System (Chart) Your cumulative GPA at APUS is determined solely by the courses you have taken at APUS towards your current degree. If you change your major, your previous APUS courses will roll over into your GPA for your new major.
However, if you graduate from a program, you would start over with a fresh GPA when you start on your next program. For example, your grades towards your conferred Associate degree at APUS do not impact your subsequent GPA in your Bachelor program.
