Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to remain in good standing. If your GPA falls below the 2.0/3.0 level, you are subject to probation or suspension. You will be notified by your school or college.
The instructor who assigns an "I" sets the conditions under which the course work can be completed and the time limit for its completion. The student is expected to complete the requirements within the established deadline. It is the instructor's and/or the student's decision whether a course should be retaken.
The GPA for undergraduate students includes all courses taken as an undergraduate. This includes all grades for courses taken more than once. The GPA for graduate students includes all courses taken while the student is enrolled in one or more graduate programs. Graduate nondegree GPAs are computed separately.
Your grade point average (GPA) is calculated by multiplying the credit hours for the course by the points for the letter grade, totaling all the credit points and dividing them by the number of credit hours included. Pass grades and no-credit courses are not included in your GPA.
You can register for a course on a no-credit basis by completing a Schedule Adjustment form. File the schedule adjustment form in the Student Service Center by the date published in the academic calendar. Be aware that some programs prohibit students from taking courses on a no-credit basis.
If you register on a pass/fail basis, a "P" grade will be recorded if you receive a letter grade of "D-" or better; an "F" will be recorded if you fail the course. A "P" will not be included in your grade point average; an "F" will be included.

A blank grade indicates a reporting error. Generally, reporting errors are corrected prior to the start of the next semester, however, a blank grade may occasionally remain on the student’s record. The student should immediately contact the instructor and/or department to correct the error; without correction, blank grades automatically default to “F” grades at the end of the following semester.

A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 is required to meet all undergraduate graduation requirements. A student will not be approved for graduation if he or she has a grade of I which, when changed to a recorded grade, could cause the student’s grade point average to fall below the minimum required for graduation. Withdrew. This grade indicates that a student was permitted to withdraw from a course. Withdrawals will not be permitted after the withdrawal deadline of the semester (date is specified in the Academic Calendar) except in cases of hardship as determined by the appropriate official.
The instructor of the course should indicate to the student the deadline for completing the work in the course. No more than three semesters (counting summer school as one semester) may be allowed to complete the work in the course, but the instructor may specify an earlier deadline.

The semester grade point average (GPA) is the sum of all grade points earned in a semester divided by all credit hours attempted for letter grade. Credit hours in courses in which marks of WP, W, I, S, U, V, K, NG, ER, NR, or WM were assigned are excluded.
Change of Grades. A grade in a course recorded by the Office of the Registrar cannot be changed except in the following circumstances: A symbol of I not removed after three semesters (counting summer school as one semester) becomes a grade of F (or U for a course graded S/U).

The Dean's List is compiled at the end of each quarter to recognize undergraduate students who have completed 12 or more letter-graded units at Cal Poly during the quarter with a 3.5 grade point average or better for that term.
The President's List is compiled at the end of each university year to recognize those undergraduate students who have demonstrated consistent achievement, as represented by being named on the Dean's Honors List for any three of the four quarters of the university year. A grade may be changed to correct a clerical error or the error in the calculation of a grade. Grade changes cannot be processed for additional work performed or examination beyond the established course requirements.
An "I" indicates that a student has completed a major portion of the work in the course in a satisfactory manner, but for legitimate reasons judged by the instructor, a portion of the course requirements need to be completed. If illness or an emergency prevents you from finishing a course, you may request an “Incomplete” from the instructor. When you receive this grade, you must consult with the instructor as soon as possible to make arrangements for completing the course requirements. Incomplete work must be completed no later than the 6th week of the following semester. If the work is not made up by the due date, the “I” mark will be changed to the alternate grade the instructor reported.
Instructional fees are assessed for auditing a course, but no credit hours are awarded. You cannot audit a course and then later repeat the course for a grade. Auditing a course requires a Course Enrollment Permission Form with the permission of the instructor and the permission of your college office, the latter obtained by submitting to CFAES Academic Programs.
