There is a strong military presence in San Diego of active personnel, retirees and vacationing veterans. There are also a handful of highly reputable military golf courses. Admiral Baker features 36 holes and is open to civilians. Marine Memorial features a regulation 18 holes and a 9-hole par-3 course.

The North Course is shorter and less expensive than its brother. For many, it is more scenic than the South, having more picture-perfect opportunities along the track. The North Course is more popular for the less-experienced golfer but will still put up a good fight for the better ones.
It is very difficult: Extraordinary length, narrow fairways, deep rough, punishing bunkers and multi-tiered greens make it one of the toughest layouts anywhere. And you can't argue with the theater of 2008 or the champion it identified. On both counts Torrey gets an A+.
The Torrey Pines South Course is the more challenging of the two and is the host of the 2008 & 2021 U.S. Open Championships. The South course was originally designed by William Bell, Sr. in 1957, and is home to the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Golf Tournament (along with the North Course).

San Diego rivals Orlando as having the best short course metro area in the U.S. You can play La Loma, a par-3 course right near the airport, or night golf at Mission Bay, a par 58 near downtown.

Highly scenic and relatively affordable golf awaits east of San Diego in Jamul. Steele Canyon is a 27-hole facility designed by Gary Player that has a mix of low-lying holes around a vineyard and some that play dramatically high up into the hillsides and offer some marvelous scenery. The Canyon-Ranch nines have the most appeal to visitors, so try and get that routing when you book (the Vineyard nine is dominated by housing corridors). Green fees: $129-149 non-resident

There is a collection of reputable San Diego golf resorts, but the municipal roster is also one of the best in the country. The walking culture is quite strong as long as the property isn't too mountainous. The destination is headlined, of course, by U.S. Open and PGA Tour host Torrey Pines, while San Diego munis Balboa Park and Mission Bay, lit for nighttime play, also serve locals well. Neighboring municipalities like Carlsbad, Coronado and Oceanside also deliver affordable, fun munis for all.
It is the only golf course in San Diego with night lighting. Located in the community of Pacific Beach, Mission Bay Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 58 executive course featuring four par-four holes and 14 par-three holes. It is where Tiger Woods won a Junior World title.
Tee times are from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting. The last 18-hole tee time is 6:22 p.m. and the last nine-hole tee time is 8 p.m. All players must end play by 9:30 p.m. as the course lights are turned off promptly at 9:45 p.m.

As of April 17, 2021, the driving range grass tees will be available every Saturday, Sunday and Monday. All other days will be mats only.
