Its origin began while Philip K. Dick was doing research for The Man in the High Castle. At the time he was reading diaries seized after World War II of Gestapo officers and agents—in German no less, as he knew it well enough to read it—at the UC Berkeley Library.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is a 1968 science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick. It tells of the moral crisis of Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter who stalks almost-human androids in a nuclear fallout-clouded, partially deserted future San Francisco.
The most notable difference between the novel and the film is probably the absence of the term “blade runner.” The movie title was actually inspired by the name of a 1979 William S. Burroughs novella, however in the book, Deckard is simply referred to as a bounty hunter. The word “replicant” never shows up either.

The protagonist of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Rick Deckard is an experienced police officer and bounty hunter, who, during the course of the novel, is sent to hunt down and kill (“retire”) six androids that have escaped from Mars.
As Deckard set up the Voigt-Kampff apparatus, he explained the test to her and the Rosens asked him to test Rachael first. After several questions, the test determined Rachael was an android.
Deckard then escapes and retires some androids there before returning to his own police station. Deckard takes the Voight-Kampff test and passes, confirming that he is a human.
But instead of mercy or forgiveness, Mercer delivers a devastating message: Deckard will do immoral things no matter what. Mercer tells him that this is the curse of all life because creation breeds destruction, and there's no way out of the loop.
Ray Bradbury’s prose is in and of itself a thing of beauty, and Isaac Asimov is a genius, but for my money, Philip K. Dick is the best sci-fi writer ever. His stories keep you thinking and ruminating for days after you’ve read them. I guess you could say that I’m a big fan of his. In the year 2054, precogs can “see” violent crimes before they occur. John Anderton, played by Tom Cruise , is a member of the D.C. police department and uses these future visions to prevent the crimes before they happen. Spielberg directs and as always, does not disappoint. Although the short story of the same name and this movie differ substantially, Minority Report is classic Philip K. Dick storytelling – the perfect blend of science fiction and philosophy. Just, what’s with that crazy lady in the garden who tries to make out with Tom Cruise ?
Based on the novel of the same name, A Scanner Darkly was animated in that weird Charles Schwab commercial-style (interpolated rotoscope), an element that helps add to the film’s exhibition of mind-altering drugs. Keanu does what he does best – which is play dumb and confused, and Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey, Jr. are solid. This is definitely a cerebral film that comes together in a pretty disturbing manner. Yet, it’s only number four on this list.
Screamers isn’t great, but it’s better than Paycheck, Imposter, and the laughably bad Next. Sorry, I haven’t been able to take Nic Cage seriously since 8mm. Screamers is based on Dick’s story “Second Variety” and takes place in the year 2078 on a planet called Sirius 6B. There’s a future war going on over the mining of berynium, and A.I.-machines called “screamers” are used as weapons. Screamers was generally panned, but it’s not a bad movie considered the limited budget. Plus, Peter Weller is pretty cool.
