Now far separated from the temple in Jerusalem, how could his education and training be of any real value? There was no need to worry. YEHOVAH God was looking after His own. The Creator had called Ezekiel to be a great prophet, ranked alongside Isaiah and Jeremiah.
The prophet did have a comparatively small personal audience in Babylon of fellow captives from Judah (Ezekiel 3:11). But the real import of his message was not primarily for these deported, displaced prisoners who could do little about their circumstance.
These dry bones represent people. The Bible says, "He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life" (1 John 5:12). If a person does not have Jesus, his bones are bleached, white, and dry. Spiritually speaking, he has no life.
In the Bible, a corpse not properly buried was considered to be accursed by God.
Ephesians 2:1 says, "And you hath he quickened [revived], who were dead in trespasses and sins.". If sin still reigns in our lives, if we're still controlled by a life of sin, then we're spiritually dead. We are as good as dry bones. Thankfully, the hope in this story is that God can revive dry bones.
Most people associate the book of Ezekiel with one of two things: God's chariot with the "wheel in the middle of a wheel," or the dry bones that come back to life. Both of these visions have inspired several lively songs, but rarely are they the subject of practical or serious Bible study.
If so, that means Ezekiel would have been only 25 years old at the time he was forced to leave his homeland. Thirty was also the age when a priest could begin to minister (Numbers 4:3). It was at age 30 that Jesus began His ministry, Joseph began to rule over Egypt, and David began his reign.

The Valley of Dry Bones: What God is saying to the Church through Ezekiel. The vision of Ezekiel in chapter 37 of his book is one of the most powerful anywhere in the Old Testament. He sees a valley covered with dry bones. God asks him whether they can come back to life.
God asks him whether they can come back to life. Rather than a simple "Of course not", he says, "Sovereign Lord, only you can answer that.". He is told to "prophesy to the bones" that God would bring them back to life, and so it happens: the bones come together, they are covered with sinews and muscles and skin.
But Ezekiel sees a two-stage miracle. First the bones come together and are clothed with flesh, and then they are covered with flesh and skin. It's only after the reconstitution of their bodies that the breath of life is breathed into them. There are other places where the form of religion is there, but the spirit is absent.
The vision is meant to convey what God wants to do for his people of Judah, both the ones in Jerusalem and the ones in exile in Babylon. They are, to all intents and purposes, dry bones. At this stage in their history they had been invaded and conquered. The best of them, Ezekiel among them, had been deported to a strange land.
Nehemiah and Ezra tell that story. Jerusalem would prosper again. And the people's experience of exile, the hard thinking that would come out of it, would help to ensure the survival of Judaism after the final destruction of the Temple in AD 70. But the Valley of Dry Bones doesn't just speak of God's grace to Israel.
But God can "make these bones live", too. There is no situation into which he can't breathe life. In Hebrew the words for "wind" and "breath" are the same. God's Holy Spirit is his gift to the Church, and he can enliven even places and people who seem beyond hope. Ezekiel's vision is a vision to encourage all of us.
