Built specially for the 2016 Games on what had been a nature reserve next to the beach in western Rio, the links-style course was meant to convert Brazilians to a sport they barely know and put the city on the international golfing map.
The course has 18 holes with greens carefully maintained, golf cart rental, driving range, golf lessons, locker room and all the necessary structure for large-scale events. The club is the place which hosted the return of golf as an Olympic modality after a 112 years and left its legacy to Rio de Janeiro.

Remember all the grumbling? It was hard to ignore in advance of the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, where golf made its much-ballyhooed return to the Olympics following more than a century’s absence.
Today, golf is not the most popular in Brazil. Or the second-most. Or the third. Or fourth. Or fifth. The favelas do not brim with aspiring Tour pros. It seems naive to think that was ever going to happen.

Repurposing Olympic venues after the completion of the competition is always challenging, but golf was supposed to be different. Hanse’s layout was supposed to be different. It was supposed to become a beacon for the game in an undeveloped land.
Water in one Olympic practice pool has turned orange, while a neighboring building sports tattered tapestries the Brazilian artist Adriana Varejao created. Panels appear to be falling off the structure.

Venues such as the pool, velodrome and the Olympic Park now resemble ghost towns that no one visits. Even Rio's new mayor, Marcelo Crivella, has abandoned plans to turn the handball arena into a public school, while the athletes village, with it's luxury apartments, is now abandoned.
