Corking a bat lightens the lumber, which in turn increases bat speed and, the conventional wisdom holds, hit distance. Corkers typically drill a hole at the end of the bat, hollow out the “sweet spot,” and fill it with wine corks or Superballs. The hole is then sealed with a combination of sawdust and pine tar.
The ball is dead and no runners may advance. If the batter-runner drops his bat and the ball rolls against the bat in fair territory and, in the umpire's judgment, there was no intention to interfere with the course of the ball, the ball is alive and in play.
But there was another way corking might work: a corked bat is a few ounces lighter than an unadulterated one, and a lighter bat means a batter can swing faster, which means he can generate more force and hit the ball farther.
The number that you see on bats refers to the length of the bat (in inches) subtracted from the weight (in ounces). So if you have a bat that's 28 inches long that weighs 20 ounces you'd have a -8 bat.

A batter could carry his bat to first base (why he would want to slow himself down is the real mystery) and would probably not be declared out for carrying it, unless the umpire felt the bat had somehow interfered with a fielder.
By cupping out the end, that will remove any unnecessary weight that is toward the end of the barrel and allow a player to have more control and give them quicker swing speeds.
Plate umpire Tim McClelland conferred with his crew, then ejected Sosa for using a corked bat. Sosa apologized "from the bottom of my heart" after the game. He acknowledged ownership of the bat, explaining that he occasionally used it for batting practice and for home run exhibitions to entertain his fans.
