Six Sigma-certified professionals can use statistical analysis to increase efficiency and reduce waste. Consequently, this methodology can save organizations money, improve morale and performance, and elevate product quality.
While Six Sigma was originally developed to find process variations, or inconsistencies, such as wear and tear on a machine that affects product quality, Six Sigma users learned that the methodology could also apply to improving areas like profitability.
DMAIC and DMADV are different strategies for tackling projects under the Six Sigma philosophy. They’re the “backbones of Lean Six Sigma,” Ungar says. “They are a systematic approach to problem-solving and design.”
Six Sigma black belt certification training tends to last at least four weeks, according to Campe. The third and fourth weeks focus on organization-specific information and projects. Some programs, however, offer up to 16 weeks of training. Black belts also need to take an exam. Lean Six Sigma - Black Belt.
DMAIC is an acronym for define, measure, analyze, improve and control. “In a DMAIC problem, there is an existing process in which to implement the identified improvements and then measure the results,” Ungar explains.
Six Sigma certification is divided into six levels, each indicating a professional’s skills, experience, knowledge of Six Sigma principles and role in a project. The levels, which correspond to martial arts belts, start with white and advance to master black belt.
The Six Sigma methodology uses data to improve processes and performance in a range of industries. According to Lee Campe, president and owner of consulting service Performance Excellence Inc., this methodology is primarily “about solving problems by: 1. Proving they exist, 2. Identifying the root cause and 3.
So as you can see, for the companies we talked about, how important it is for Six Sigma because there is a very high cost to the errors and the defects, either in what they’re manufacturing, the product they’re producing, or the service they’re providing. So this is everything that you need to know about Six Sigma.
If you want to get certified in Six Sigma, first you must have been involved in analyzing and solving quality issues. This means you have worked with Six Sigma, Lean project management, or any other quality-related projects. These requirements also differ depending on the level of certification you’re seeking.
Companies invest in Six Sigma certification because it offers a designed set of tools and techniques that help improve the processes within an organization. The primary goal of certification is to validate individuals who posses skills needed to identify errors in a process and eliminate them.

So let’s take a look at some of the requirements. So in addition to these, for a Green Belt, you also must have 3 years’ experience in one or more areas, where the more…the areas that we talked about.
So what are the five basic stages? So there’s define, measure, analyze, improve, and control. So those are the five stages. So what are the requirements to qualify to take the exam?
Companies that have applied Six Sigma and found success with the approach include big enterprises such as, Amazon, 3M, Boeing, Ford, GE, McKesson, Johnson Controls, GEICO and the US Army and Marines . While Six Sigma isn’t the standard across all aspects of these companies, it can be applied where needed and show positive results.
Six sigma refers to the methodology and practice of focusing on developing and delivering products/services that perform at high standards. It is a Quality philosophy and a management technique. It is not a standard or certification or another metric like a percentage.
There is an error in the last diagram. 6 sigma means +/- 6 sigma which means 6 deviations on either side.
Particularly, DMAIC is a logical framework that helps you think through and plan improvements to a process in pursuit of achieving a Six Sigma level of excellence.
Let’s cover the Sigma first. Sigma denoted by symbol σ (a Greek letter) represents the standard deviation of a population. Primarily it characterizes the dispersion (or ‘spread’) of a set of data values with respect to mean. A standard deviation is a value you have to calculate and is dependent on the data your process generates.
Now let’s put them together for 6 Sigma: A Six Sigma process has a specification limit which is 6 times its sigma (standard deviation) away from its mean. The 6 refers to the ability to fit the good outputs of the process to fit within 6 standard deviations (or sigmas). Another way to say it is that only 3.4 defects per every million opportunities fall outside the specification limits that we’ve set at 6 sigmas away from center.
For each standard deviation you are away from the mean (0 in the graphic above) your process gets more and more defect-free. Let’s look at a 3 Sigma process for example. In a normally distributed process if mean ±3σ range of output is between USL and LSL then around 99.73% of the points of the output will be non-defective.
Six Sigma provides better value to customers, employees and all the stake holders in an organization . Additionally, it is a business initiative which improves quality, productivity and reduces cost.
Generally, it should take at least one to two years. Although formal training classes may take far less time, passing a training class is not sufficient proof of a person's Lean Six Sigma skillset. A certification is intended to validate a person's expertise; that expertise requires time to apply the tools in a variety of ways.
Acquire a Lean Six Sigma certification - If you truly applied the Lean Six Sigma tools & concepts, then it should be very easy to get certified. Generally you can get certified by two sources: your employer (through their own Lean Six Sigma program) or a separate training company or institution (like a college). The employer path is usually the most preferred because they more often are led by Lean Six Sigma experts or Master Black Belts who can personally validate your application of the Lean Six Sigma tools and concepts. However, this option is less common and less available to folks not employed by them.
Many other training organizations offer similar Lean Six Sigma training content for $2,000 - $7,000 and their training lasts 40 to 200 hours long.

That creates a lot of flexibility but it also causes a lot of variation in the level of skills they are certifying. Many organizations require students to attend classroom training and others grant a certification by requiring the candidate pass an exam and validate they led a Lean Six Sigma-based project.
There is no central organization governing Lean Six Sigma certifications. Not many people realize that there is no governing body that centrally grants or manages Lean Six Sigma certifications. Any organization can create their own certification standards as they want. That creates a lot of flexibility but it also causes a lot ...
It certainly isn't easy, especially when so many recruiters or managers looking to hire someone with Lean Six Sigma expertise don't realize that a Lean Six Sigma certification doesn't truly validate the candidate's expertise in Lean Six Sigma.
While the Six Sigma methodology is for the most part standard, Six Sigma deployment catches many people off guard; they’re not used to the lack of structure or rules around deployment within their company. Each company is different: structure, culture, reward systems and size.
Motorola has registered and trademarked the phrase “Six Sigma”. Each consulting company owns the copyrights to their own intellectual property and training materials. Certification is in the eyes of the beholder. Given the limited information I know :), here are my pearls of wisdom:
There isn’t a single certification body for Six Sigma. Because of this, you’ll find certification options from consulting companies (like the one that probably trained and certified the first wave in your business) and ASQ, as well as from businesses like Motorola, Allied Signal, GE, and many others. Each of these businesses has different ...
Don’t use the trademarked terms of other companies without their permission. Don’t steal, reprint, or use other people’s copyrighted materials without their written permission. Set and use Six Sigma certification standards that are appropriate for your company.
So the answer to this question is also Yes. There are other companies that are not listed on iSixSigma that would certify your company and employees. But you should refer back to my previous answer to determine the differences between certifications.
It’s one of the problems of Six Sigma, and also one of the greatest aspects of Six Sigma. You use Six Sigma as your company determines is most appropriate. What…you need to do work to successfully implement Six Sigma in your company (note the sarcasm)? Yes. While the Six Sigma methodology is for the most part standard, Six Sigma deployment catches many people off guard; they’re not used to the lack of structure or rules around deployment within their company. Each company is different: structure, culture, reward systems and size. But if you ask me, it’s the lack of structure that allows each company to maximize their benefit from a customized deployment.
Six Sigma is a highly disciplined approach that enables us to focus on creating and delivering nearly-perfect products and services. The underlying idea being that if you can measure how many “defects” you have in a process, you can systematically figure out a way to eliminate them and get as close to “zero defects” as possible. This concept is the motivating factor why employers today are increasingly searching for candidates with this type of certification
By enrolling your employees, Six Sigma can drastically improve your organization’s bottom line, and at the same time help your employees climb the corporate ladder.
