The word ‘handy’ means that the horse turns very well and stays balanced. It also means that the horse can be ridden at different rates of speed according to what questions the course designer (or the uneven ground) has asked. Handy Hunters classes can have sharp turns as well as a walk, trot, or a gallop fence.
Handy Hunter is similar to Working Hunter where the horse is judged on a course of obstacles that again simulate obstacles found in a hunting field: fences, brush and walls. Depending on the division, obstacles can range in height from 18” to 3 feet 3 inches.
There are three main divisions at a hunter/jumper horse show: hunter, jumper and equitation. In all three, a rider guides a horse over a set course of obstacles in a ring. However, each is scored differently. The jumper discipline is scored based on the objective speed and accuracy the rider has over the course.
A handy horse is one that is very easy to maneuver around a course. The judge will want to see a horse that can handle tighter turns more easily and take some chances while being very responsive.
Hunters are judged on the horse's movement, presence, manner of going and jumping ability. Equitation classes are judged on the rider's position, ability, and poise. Jumpers are judged on speed, time, and athletic ability over fences.

Riding a Jumper Course Compared to a hunter course, showjumper jumps are higher, wider, and come down more easily. Distances are tougher, combinations are tighter, and courses are designed to test athleticism and trust, rather than show off style and skill.
Show jumping is all about the numbers. The horse and rider team with the fastest time and the fewest faults wins. Hunters: Where the horse and rider jump a course and the judging is based on accuracy, grace, and elegance. Jumpers Where the horse and rider memorize a course of jumps and a jump-off course.

Improve adjustability and clear, soft communication by developing, recognizing and getting comfortable with a hand gallop (between 14 and 16 mph). As George Morris would say, control of pace is the first necessity of riding.
Develop a hand gallop. Pick up a right lead working canter on the far side of the arena opposite the ground poles. Before the corner, ask your horse to smoothly build speed and lengthen his stride to a hand gallop over three to five strides: Get up in two-point with weight in your heels and contact through your lower leg.

This is because, on the hunt field, it is necessary for riders to be able to pull up quickly if there is an unforeseen hazard. The horse should give the appearance of being pleasant to ride.
Handy hunter classes are a popular choice in hunter divisions, but they can also present challenging jumping options . By simply utilizing three cones and couple of jumps, international hunter derby rider Hope Hobday Glynn shows how riders and horses can easily practice several handy hunter exercises right at home, build upon their skills, and develop the confidence needed to tackle those challenges once in the show ring. Aboard Fandango HX owned by Karen Trione, Glynn demonstrates how utilizing several different track options around the end of the arena to a jump can dramatically vary the degree of difficulty of the exercise, while also being easily customizable to a rider’s and horse’s abilities, create a positive and encouraging jumping experience, and avoid common mistakes.
Hope Hobday Glynn is the owner/operator of Sonoma Valley Stables in Petaluma, California and trainer at Wild Oaks Stables in Santa Rosa, California . She is also ranked as a top-10 USHJA International Hunter Derby rider. She has been an “R” judge for US Equestrian for the last 20 years.
