First-time shooters in a beginner pistol class will learn state laws, basic firearm safety rules, proper shooting stances, parts of a pistol, how to clean a pistol, and more. These are things that you learn in a basic class. Instructors and ranges may have different options to sign up for a class.
You can defeat the fear by learning about manual safeties, trigger safeties, and the rules for how to treat a firearm. Basic firearm rules covered in class include keeping your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Trigger discipline is, in my opinion, the most important gun safety rule.
The minimum information an instructor should ask for is your full legal name, email address, phone number, and home address. The state will require your full legal name in order to send you the certificate needed to get a permit.
Proper shooting clothing includes closed-toe shoes, pants with a belt to facilitate holster wear, and a shirt with sleeves and closure around the neck. I would highly recommend wearing clothing that you plan to wear regularly and carry concealed in.
For self-defense, I recommend only carrying hollow-point ammunition in your concealed carry pistol. These bullets expand on impact and do not go through a target to injure anything that is behind it. The biggest fear for new shooters is carrying a gun with a round loaded in the chamber. This fear stems from being uncomfortable with pistols.

It’s a Certificate, Not a Concealed Carry License. No state in the US allows downloadable concealed carry licenses. What online classes offer is virtual training, a test to see if you retain the information, and a downloadable certification of completion of handgun safety.
However, at a basic level, students must shoot a total of 25 rounds at the target and must hit with 18 shots to get a passing score. Additionally, the concealed carry distance qualification is performed at 3, 5, and 7 yards using a B-27 target.
Below I’ve outlined the course of fire for the Arkansas Enhanced permit shooting test, which covers 3, 7, and 15 yards. Additionally, the shooting test is performed on a standard B-27 target.

Documentation for the Illinois concealed carry shooting test is fairly descriptive. To qualify for a concealed carry license in Illinois, you must shoot a total of 30 rounds; 10 shots from 5, 7, and 10 yards.
Although Texas has a bit of a reputation when it comes to guns, their concealed carry exam is no joke and probably the most intense to perform. The Texas concealed carry distance qualification is only rivaled by the Arkansas Enhanced Permit shooting test. Unfortunately, I was unable to track down a code or document specifically outlining the shooting test.
However, students are still expected to hit the target with 18 of 25 rounds fired. The shooting test is conducted by firing 5 rounds at 3 yards with one hand. Next, students must fire 5 rounds at 7 yards. This exercises is repeated for two repetitions. Finally, students must shoot 5 rounds at 10 yards for two repetitions. This information was obtained from the Kansas Attorney General office.
The Missouri shooting test appears to mirror a self defense shooting scenario. Applicants are required to shoot from a distance of 7 yards for the Missouri shooting exam. Additionally, 15 of the 20 rounds fired must hit the B-27 silhouette target to pass.
While we all want to get to the fun stuff and on the range, having a solid understanding of laws and the legal system is in your best interest. This is one reason I disagree with states that give military veterans a concealed carry license with no training required.
This topic should be covered fairly early on in any worthy concealed carry course. I always challenge students to ask themselves why they are obtaining a cc license.
For many students I train, the whole “what handgun is right for me” question can be daunting. Skills such as, reloads, clearing malfunctions, defeating the safety if your pistol has one, proper grip, and so on can be directly related to the handgun you select, it is an important consideration.
A demonstration, discussion and recommendations of good concealed carry methods, holsters and related equipment should be part of any credible cc training course.
As I mentioned earlier, some states do not require shooting qualifications much less basic live fire training. Just because someone can pass a background check does not mean they are capable or safe with a loaded gun in their hands.
There are 3 rules that you should remember with regard to firearm safety for your concealed carry test. First, ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Second, ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
One of the most common shooting position that you’ll be questioned about on a concealed carry test is the isosceles stance. Additionally, the isosceles stance is named after the shape your arms make in relation to your body when viewed from above.
First, keeping the weapon pointed in a safe direction ensures that a negligent discharge or handgun malfunction mitigates the risk of injury. Therefore, the first rule of safety is your fail safe .
Finally, during the cycle of operation, an automatic will eject a spent casing while a revolver simply rotates the wheel thereby changing the chamber.
Furthermore, you can check the caliber of the cartridge by looking at the bottom of the casing where the primer resides. Above is an example of both of these scenarios.
Second, you should keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. This does NOT mean to rest your finger on the trigger guard. Instead, you should keep your trigger finger on the frame of the pistol to prevent accidental contact with the trigger. This is more commonly known as “trigger discipline.”.
Front Sight – used in conjunction with rear sight to achieve proper sight alignment. Rear Sight – usually notched and used in conjunction with front sight. Slide – recoils when a round is fired opening the ejection port to expel spent casing. Ejection Port – location where spent casing is ejected from the chamber.

The Ohio CCW license is a plastic license, like a driver ’s license. This license allows the holder to carry a loaded concealed handgun in public. The county Sheriff’s office is who issues a CCW license. The state has set the training requirement. It also specifies what can prevent someone from getting the license.
The Ohio concealed carry (CCW, CHL) license isn’t just for those in the military or police. Approximately 1 out of every 20 Ohioans have the Ohio CCW license. That is around 600,000 CCW license holders in Ohio.

Yes, as a part of the CCW training requirements, Ohio’s law requires passing a written test. The class teaches the test material before the test. Even attentive novice shooters should be able to pass the course and test. We have failed entitled people who didn’t care to learn or pass the test.

With inside the waistband carry, you simply use a holster that either clips or loops on to your belt and sits inside the waistband of your pants. This is the position that I like to use to carry, and there are many reasons why it has become so popular. For starters, it conceals the gun very well, and it’s comfortable.
For one, you really have to be aware of where your gun is at all times. You can never leave it unattended or in reach of another person, even if they don’t know it’s there.
