Social inequality refers to the uneven distribution of wealth and power within society. Wealth and power bring with them an increased chance of having a better job, better health, better housing and a better education.
Strata are layers and almost all societies are stratified in some way or another. Social stratification means there is a hierarchy in which those at the higher levels will possess more power, more money, a better income and more social status.
We used to measure social class in Britain by using the Registrar General’s scale, in which individuals were classified according to their occupation. Generally people were divided according to whether their jobs were manual or non-manual, and then further divided depending on their level of responsibility.
