The purpose of this seminar is to introduce students to some of the research being done at Case that explores questions at the intersection of mathematics and biology. Students will explore roughly five research collaborations, spending two weeks with each research group. In the first three classes of each two-week block, students will read and discuss relevant papers, guided by members of that research group, and the two-week period will culminate in a talk in which a member of the research group will present a potential undergraduate project in that area. After the final group’s talk, students will divide themselves into groups of two to four people and choose one project for further exploration. Together, they will write up this project as a research proposal, introducing the problem, explaining how it connects to broader scientific questions, and outlining the proposed work. It is expected that students will use the associated research group as a resource, but the proposal should be their own work. Students will submit a first draft, receive feedback, and then submit a revised draft. Offered as BIOL 309 and MATH 342.

Mathematics Senior Project. Students pursue a project based on experimental, theoretical or teaching research under the supervision of a mathematics faculty member , a faculty member from another Case department or a research scientist or engineer from another institution. A departmental Senior Project Coordinator must approve all project proposals and this same person will receive regular oral and written progress reports. Final results are presented at the end of the second semester as a paper in a style suitable for publication in a professional journal as well as an oral report in a public Mathematics Capstone symposium.

A three credit course on mathematical modeling as it applies to the origins sciences. Students gain practical experience in a wide range of techniques for modeling research questions in cosmology and astrophysics, integrative evolutionary biology (including physical anthropology, ecology, paleontology, and evolutionary cognitive science), and planetary science and astrobiology. Building on the material in Biology 300, this course focuses on the mathematical tools used to construct and analyze biological models, with examples drawn largely from ecology but also from epidemiology, developmental biology, and other areas. Analytic “paper and pencil” techniques are emphasized, but we will also use computers to help develop intuition. By the end of the course, students should be able to recognize basic building blocks in biological models, be able to perform simple analysis, and be more fluent in translating between verbal and mathematical descriptions. You can use CaseCash to buy groceries at Constantino’s Market (convenient, but a bit overpriced). You can even use CaseCash to buy tickets for events happening around campus.
The best thing that you can do when registering for classes is not only trying to get the classes you need, but scheduling them at a time that works best for you. There are many locations on campus that accept “movable meal swipes,” or meal swipes that you can use at places outside of the standard dining halls (Leutner on Northside and Fribley on Southside). These places include, but are not limited to, the L3 grill (below Leutner), The Den (on Northside), the Jolly Scholar (on Mather Quad), and Subway (on the quad, inside Tomlinson). While many of these places serve your stereotypical, late night college junk food, and the number of movable meal swipes that you can use at certain venues is limited per day and week, it’s always good to know that there are other options available if you find yourself getting tired of dining hall food. And you will; trust me.

The “Greenies” are shuttles, but they aren’t actually green. They pick up and drop off students at various locations around campus. This service is really useful if you want to avoid travelling around campus by foot, whether this is due to the time of day, the weather, or just plain laziness. I only utilized the Greenies a handful of times during my freshman year, but they were really handy when I needed them. There is an app called “NextBus” that lets you select a Greenie based on its route. Once selected, the app lets you visually track the shuttle on a map, and also gives you the predicted time of arrival.
Since the freshman dorms do not have air conditioning (most of the dorms don’t), you will need to bring a fan. Even with the fan, it may be a bit uncomfortable during that first month of school, so be prepared. 3. Do freshman orientation right. Freshman orientation makes for an exciting, yet exhausting week.
This course deals with a complicated biological topic: DNA and genes. Students need to fully understand the complex system of cell division and the chromosomes that give rise to genes. Also, you will also learn about the role genes play in geneology, which can be very hard.
Studying a totally different culture from a distance is hard. Moreover, what makes the course harder is its requirement. The course expects students to understand Asian culture by drawing parallels with the western one. The main focus is on drama and cinema roles crucial in bringing forth a specific culture. Thus, a lot of analysis makes the course hard to deal with.
Sociologists aim to investigate societal factors and what impacts society. In this course, students will be introduced to the overarching fundamentals of society. Students will address questions and think critically about them as they find ways to overcome the social issues that have generated overtime. This course also examines contemporary social theories as well as those from the past. Students will be required to think link sociologists as they digest new ways to solve societal conflicts.
Students will learn about how scientists and their counterparts think in order to form questions about today's world. Students will also learn about the cognitive science within different fields such as psychology, linguistics, music, art, literature, neuroscience, and computer science. Students will be able to question and think critically about the world around them throughout the duration of this course.
2. BIOL 114 - Principles of Biology. Biology is found everywhere. It's in the environment, in the air, and even in your own body. This course will introduce the foundations and principles of biology and how it influences a person's daily life.
We all know Ariel's father is the king of the sea, King Triton. What you may not know is that he is also the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. This course will examine Greek literature and mythology as it relates to its historical and cultural context. Students will learn about ongoing wars, tyranny, freedom, Greek families, and the roles of men and women in ancient societies.
As student models hit the runway in bodysuits painted by fellow students depicting various systems and organs of the human body, emcees provide important lessons in physiology. Funds raised are donated to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.
Dinner, dancing and entertainment! Everyone enjoys Nightingala, a semi-formal event sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Nurse’s Association. Students then head to Nurse Prom, held at The Spot, where free food and fun continues.
