Online tests can detect cheating if students cheat or violate their academic integrity policies. They catch cheats by using proctoring software, cameras, and IP monitoring. However, without proctoring, online tests cannot detect if you cheated if you do it smartly or involve professionals to write your work.
To cheat on your Canvas exam or test, students copy-paste answers, copy from their notes, discuss with colleagues, and use their phones to search for answers. However, the most effective way students cheat Canvas is by hiring experts to write their assignments and take their tests when not limited in location.
Canvas Quiz Logs can provide some information about: When the student started the quiz attempt. How long the student spent answering each question and in what order. When the student submitted the quiz attempt.
Click on your course settings and then "Student View." This will generate a "test student." You can then go into speedgrader or the gradebook and enter in grades for this student. These grades will "stick" until you reset the test student.
It can typically tell if a student minimizes it because it loses "focus" and will likely show up in the log that they "stopped viewing the quiz.....", but Canvas can't tell anything else about the computer itself or other programs running on it.
At this time Canvas analytics do not measure activity on mobile devices, with the exception of Analytics Beta which does measure activity across devices.

To ensure that you receive these submission comments, we recommend that you use the email notification setting below. If you have more students than you can keep track of with these submission comments, we recommend communicating to your students that they should email you directly rather than using a submission comment to ask a question about their grade. This way, students will need to provide you with appropriate context for their question/concern regarding the assignment in question.
