Pete Dye’s team dug out the lakeside bluffs in order to elevate the inland sections of the course. That massive feat of earthmoving left this intimidating par 3 hard against the water. The Straits course reminds me of Royal Dornoch in Scotland, with its holes running parallel to the water in an out-and-back fashion. The overall look and feel of Straits are very reminiscent of Scotland. But the holes are not nearly as memorable.
The par 5s are all three-shot projects for everyone except the longest hitters. ”. “One aspect of a complete golf game that seems to be disappearing from the Straits Course is the recovery shot. You're either in the fairway or blasting out from a deep bunker or thick vegetation.
Looking at this tee shot from the back tees is utterly terrifying. You cant see the fairway, but you can see dozens of bunkers – and to even get the ball in play, you’ve gotta clear a lot of bunkers.
Pebble Beach is one. Augusta National another. But essentially Whistling Straits is a bucket list destination. It’s something you have to do at least once if you truly consider yourself a golfer.
