RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The Chevron Championship will end a 51-year run at Mission Hills Country Club today, but women's professional golf will still have a home in the desert with the announcement on Sunday that a new Legends of the LPGA tournament will debut next April.
History. Founded in 1972 by Colgate-Palmolive chairman David Foster, and entertainer Dinah Shore, the tournament has been classified as a major since 1983. Since its inception, it has been held annually at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, southeast of Palm Springs.
So now the hole is 485 yards for each round, putting players’ minds and hearts to the test as much as their games.
But in the crazy pandemic world where we are all looking to get back to normal, an unadorned island green at the ANA Inspiration might well be the new normal. With no backstop, a firm putting surface and shaved slopes surrounding the green, the 18th has taken on a new life.
Dada said the growth of Coachella Valley tourism over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic meant that the impact of a single event's exit was likely to be less strongly felt.
