Written communication is typically a component of at least one required general education class in college programs. Composition courses includes various types of writing assignments, including narrative, essay, short story and poetry.

During the first academic year, unless the requirement has been completed, freshmen shall enroll in G.E. Area A. 1, Oral Communication, G.E. Area A. 2, Written Communication, and G.E. Area B. 4, Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning, courses appropriate to each student's major and skill level.
Completion of the “Golden Four” The following semester campuses require the "Golden Four" courses (Oral Communication, Written Communication, Critical Thinking, Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning) be completed the semester before the start of the upcoming term.
Critical Thinking courses promise to show their students how the disciplinary practices being introduced in that class use at least three of the following lenses: (1) reasoning, (2) representation, (3) cultural judgment, (4) information literacy, and (5) metacognitive reflection.
Courses offering upper-division credit are those numbered at the 300- and 400-levels. All units from upper-division courses are applicable to the upper-division units requirement, including units from courses in the major, the minor and general education.
Graduation credit requirements, outlined in detail below, include the following: a minimum of 120 credits, 42 of which need to be upper-division. Thirty of the 42 upper-division need to be taken "in residence" at CSU. And, 15 of the last 30 credits need to be taken "in residence".

Within the units required for the baccalaureate, it is possible for a student to complete the requirements for more than one major within one degree (for example a B.S.) when the additional major is within the same degree (in this case, another B.S.).
CSUF will accept "Credit" or "Pass" for all transferable college courses completed in Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall 2020 terms and in Winter, Spring or Summer 2021 term.
