IT'S HILLY 15, which played as the most difficult hole the last two times Bethpage hosted a major championship. The 457-yard par-4 is long, but plays plenty longer thanks to a green that's perched some 50 feet above the fairway, with a two-tiered green that slopes from back to front.
When played from the back tees, The International is ranked as the hardest golf layout in the U.S. according to all three ratings. It has an unrivaled 81.7 Course Rating, a 155 Slope Rating and a Bogey Rating of 112.2.
In the early 1930s, the Bethpage Park Authority purchased Lenox Hills Country Club and hired golf course architect A.W. Wilson’s approach to his greenkeeping team, in particular the superintendents on the Black Course as they look ahead to May, is to give them plenty of information and allow them the space to do their jobs and develop their skills.

It is the most difficult of Bethpage's five courses , and is known for the warning sign at the first tee, placed in the early 1980s, which reads "The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers.". In 2002, the Black Course hosted the U.S. Open, which returned in 2009, ...

Making the turn at Bethpage Black I realized I was in for more than I bargained for. I prepared for Black's mystique by reading as much as I could about the course. I even brushed up on some A.W. Tillinghast course design notes. And I thought I was ready.

That posted sign behind the 1st tee had gained national attention at the 2002 U.S. Open, when Bethpage Black became the first public course to play host to the US Open. After the US Open that year, many amateurs, such as myself, succumbed to the belief that we too can play this course successfully.

The Par 3, third hole is a demanding, all carry shot that is bunker-ed right and left, with long and deep traps and long, short, right or left over the bunkers is dead. When David Fay reached the par 5 fourth hole, as Feinstein recounts is when he knew The Black should hold host to a US OPEN.
The fourteenth hole, a 400 yars, split fairway is a favorite of mine and eighteen hole plays more difficult than The Black's eighteenth hole. When The Black was granted the 2002 US Open, the USGA gifted Bethpage with many furnishings.
