Serling, a 1950 Antioch grad with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature, figured it out what to do in a big way. The writer and producer went on to co-write "The Planet of the Apes" and create the groundbreaking and still relevant half-hour series "The Twilight Zone."
1967-1975Rod Serling and IC Rod Serling was a guest professor at Ithaca College from 1967-1975 and many alumni vividly remember and were influenced by his teaching. The college is proud to host the Rod Serling Archives and to display his collection of Emmy awards.
After returning from the service, Serling enrolled as a physical education student at Antioch College, but before long realized that he was destined for more creative endeavors. Changing his major to English literature and drama, Serling began to try his hand at writing.
Born in Syracuse, Serling would go on to grow up in Binghamton and then teach at Ithaca College. “He didn't feel like he had to be a Hollywood personality here, that he could just chill and be himself," said Ithaca College Archivist Bridget Bower. Serling taught at the college from 1967 until his death in 1975.
“[Serling's] work in the field and as a professor have made a huge impact on the students in Park,” said a 2007 alumna. “Seeing his Emmys displayed on my way to classes truly encouraged me to follow my dreams, and we are incredibly fortunate to have so much of his work archives at Ithaca College.
A home at 67 Bennett Ave. on the West Side of Binghamton would provide a stable environment for the Serling family.
He joined the Unitarian church in college, which allowed him to marry Kramer on July 31, 1948. They had two daughters, Jodi and Anne. Carol Serling's maternal grandmother, Louise Taft Orton Caldwell, had a summer home on Cayuga Lake in Interlaken, New York, which was the honeymoon destination for the newlyweds.
Twilight Show Earnings: In 1966 Rod sold a share of his rights and ownership of The Twilight Zone to CBS for $285,000. That's the same as $2.3 million today. Unfortunately for Mr. Serling, with the sale he relinquished the rights to royalties earned from reruns.

Cayuga LakeBy the early 1970s, Serling was spending more time back in the Finger Lakes, teaching at Ithaca College and hosting students at his family's cottage on Cayuga Lake.
Serling wrote 92 of its episodes, many bearing the imprint of his socially conscious ideas. As the host, he invited viewers into “a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind.” For Ms. Serling, “The Twilight Zone” never ended.

Early Years. Television writer and producer Rod Serling was born Rodman Edward Serling on December 25, 1924, to a Jewish family in Syracuse, New York . When Serling was 2 years old, he and his family moved to the quiet college town of Binghamton, where his dad opened a grocery store.
Despite his demanding work schedule, Anne Serling claims in her memoir of her father, As I Knew Him: My Dad, Rod Serling, that she "never felt the 12-ho ur workday," and always knew that if she needed to, she could go talk to him.
Over the course of his career, Serling wrote an estimated 252 scripts and won a total of six Emmys.
To compound matters, Serling's return from the war was followed by the devastating loss of his father, who died suddenly of a heart attack. His traumatic experiences would later serve as inspiration for his writing. After the war, Serling attended Antioch College in Ohio.
During the war, Serling was injured in his knee and wrist at the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines. He was sent home with a Purple Heart and emotional battle scars that would haunt him for the rest of his days.
