With these words David rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way. Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, "My lord the king!" When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.
But David remained at Jerusalem. Readers of these English translations assume that, by pointing out that David stayed in Jerusalem when kings customarily went to war, the text is saying that the disaster that follows could have been prevented if David had behaved in a more kingly fashion and gone to war with his army.
David rebelled against God's warning and continued in his sin, he went on to take the census. Once the census was over he came back to his senses and was troubled in his heart because he displeased God.
The cave is thought to be closely related to the symbolic HEART, and is often a place where the self and ego unite. They can be secret passageways to an underworld, places in which to make contact with the powers and forces which will eventually make their way into the world of light.
In either case, David, in a life-threatening situation, looks to God and writes, "Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in you. And in the shadow of your wings I will make my refuge." The fourth use of the phrase "in the shadow of your wings" is found in Psalm 63:7.

This argues that the relationship between the two, although strong and close, is ultimately a platonic friendship.
