Courses are designated by two numbers, separated by a colon. The first number refers to the department or area of the course; the second number refers to the specific course. For example, in the course designated 600:111 the "600" refers to the Department of Art and the "111" refers to the course.

While it might seem strange, for many students it's better to take about 15 credits in their first semester. This is recommended because 12 credits are usually the minimum to be considered a full-time student at the college. It can even affect tuition in some cases.Jun 11, 2021
Academic Credit In general students carry a minimum of 12 units and a maximum of 13 units of approved UC Davis credit courses. However, due to our special partnership, UC Davis will allow students from your institution to take up to 17 units per quarter at no additional fee (a cost savings of $340 per unit).
225 UnitMany colleges at UC Davis limit coursework (including transferred courses) to 225 units within a four year undergraduate career. Registering for classes beyond the limit requires permission of the dean. The easiest way to exceed the limit is to enter your twelfth quarter with no more than 224.5 units.
Lower division courses are any course taken at a junior college or community college or courses offered at the freshman and sophomore level at a four-year college or university regardless of the title or content of the course.

Instructors will expect you to spend two hours in out-of-class preparation for every hour that you spend in class. For example, a 15 unit course load implies 45 hours of work on your part every week (15 hours in class and 30 hours outside of class). There really are no wrong courses to take. Foreign Language coursework is required for all students who plan to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree. These students must be proficient at the 15 unit level in a single language, the equivalent of course 3 in most languages.
