Students who are certified with 39 semester units of lower-division GE-Breadth units will only be required to complete a minimum of nine semester (13.5 quarter) units of upper-division general education work after they transfer, just like other students attending their CSU campus.

Because the IGETC pattern is accepted by both the CSU and University of California, with minor differences, it’s a good option if you’re undecided about the system to which you will transfer.

There are standard formats that many colleges use to signify dates, levels and titles. Most college courses are identified by three to four numbers. For example, the first digit may indicate the class year, the middle two digits may identify the subject and the last digit may indicate the number of credit hours.
The first number refers to the department or area of the course; the second number refers to the specific course. For example, in the course designated 600:111 the "600" refers to the Department of Art and the "111" refers to the course. Courses numbered 0-99 are primarily designed for freshman and sophomore students.
Students may register for a combined maximum of 18 units of classes plus waiting list during their assigned enrollment period for a regular semester (the limit is 13 units for Summer Session, and 4 units for Winter Intersession).
Lower division courses are any course taken at a junior college or community college or courses offered at the freshman and sophomore level at a four-year college or university regardless of the title or content of the course. Graduate-Level Courses.
The first number indicates year (101 = Freshman level class) 101/Freshman, 201/Sophomore, 301/Junior, 401/Senior. Anything above these numbers is usually a graduate level course.
Typically, a course code includes a letter or number for each specific department; a letter or number for each specific subject (i.e., American history in the history/social studies department OR biology in the science department.)
The course prefix is a three-letter disgnator for a major division of an academic discipline, subject matter area, or sub-category of knowledge. The prefix is not intended to identify the department in which a course is offered. Rather, the content of a course determines the assigned prefix used to identify the course.

CSU East Bay currently requires 72-quarter units of GE with an additional 12-16 quarter units of graduation requirements.
12 unitsFull-time undergraduate students (including students seeking a second baccalaureate) are those enrolled in 12 or more units in a regular semester. Part-time undergraduate students are those enrolled in fewer than 12 units.
48 semester unitsGeneral Education Requirements Cal State East Bay has a vibrant and meaningful GE Program that incorporates state-mandated and other graduation requirements. By CSU policy (Executive Order 1100), all baccalaureate students must complete a minimum of 48 semester units of GE distributed over five areas.
Cal State East Bay students are required to fulfill the 48-unit General Education (GE) pattern as described in the GE Checklist. Download the checklist here: GE Checklist . Although courses approved for GE credit at the time of publication are noted in this catalog, new courses may be added and some courses may lose their GE certification.

Transfer students who have earned lower division GE credit from a California community college, another CSU, or the University of California prior to attending Cal State East Bay will have those lower division credits honored. However, transfer students still must complete 9 semester units of upper division GE at a CSU. Important GE policies to keep in mind are detailed in the following sections.
Students who need to satisfy 4 quarter units of Area F can use the courses on this list: Area F courses . Note: 1 semester unit is equivalent to 1.5 quarter units. They may also take a course (s) that is equivalent to a course approved for Area F under quarters, but the student cannot count the course for both Area F and another area of GE.
Grades of C- (CR) or better are required in GE Area A1 Oral Communication, A2 Written Communication, A3 Critical Thinking, and B4 Quantitative Reasoning. In all other GE areas, grades of D (or CR) or better are required for GE credit.
Students who have quarter system GE Catalog rights will notice that GE Area F and Subarea B5, as well as the “Cultural Groups and Women” Overlay requirement do not exist in this Catalog.
Note: Even though a student’s certification from a California Community College (CSU GE pattern for CSU Intersegmental General Education Transfer Education Transfer Curriculum-IGETC) or another CSU campus may show more than the maximum number of certifiable units, they must still complete a minimum of 9 upper-division residence GE semester units at Cal State East Bay or another CSU .
California Community Colleges and other authorized certifying institutions can certify up to 39 semester (60 quarter) units of General Education-Breadth (GE) or 39 semester (60 quarter) units of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) for transfer students to fulfill lower-division general education requirements for any CSU campus prior to transfer.
If a transfer student completes the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) and it is certified as being complete by their community college, they have satisfied the entire 39 semester unit lower division GE program and have only the three courses, 9 semester units, of the upper division GE program to complete.
An applicant who completes fewer than 60 semester (90 quarter) units of college credit is considered a lower-division transfer student. Due to enrollment pressures, most CSU campuses do not admit lower-division transfers so that more upper-division transfers can be accommodated.
The Second Composition requirement for transfer students, is satisfied with ENGL 200 (Col lege Writing II), another approved second composition course, or an equivalent transfer course. Students who satisfy GE Area A3, Critical Thinking, using a course on the IGETC Critical Thinking list can also use that course to satisfy the Cal State East Bay Second Composition requirement.

Constitution, and California state and local government requirement at a California Community College or other CSU campus and it is certified, Cal State East Bay will accept that certification for completion for all, or part of, the requirement. If you transferred to CSUEB, you fulfilled all or most of these lower-division requirements at your transfer institutions.
NOTE: Both major classes and GE classes can meet the overlay requirements. In fact, someone might have a course that counts for major, GE, and overlay requirements. That's triple counting! Classes that meet an overlay requirement will have a notation in the schedule, the catalog, and MyCSUEB.
