PLATO offers non-credit, participatory courses meant for seniors who want to continue learning, sharing and making new friends. The content and format of PLATO courses are determined by volunteer Course Coordinators and course participants. Any PLATO member can propose and coordinate a course.
Students will work on one course at a time in Plato. Working on one course at a time allows students to finish a course in a timely manner. Once a student finishes a course, they may begin another course in Plato if they have more credits to recover and/or they desire to work on grade enhancement.
The instruction and assignments it provides are developmentally inappropriate, assesses things it hasn't taught, and are filled with grammatical and spelling errors. Strengths: It provides rigorous assessment, interactive instruction, and it will prepare students for college or career path. Suggestions for Improvement: The cost is something that can deter schools from using the program. Verdict: I think we need to give our students alternative ways of assessing them.
The Application is optional. It will give you more practice in that area of study. After you do the tutorial, you can take the Mastery Test. The Mastery Test is usually 5-10 questions.
Checking Progress. In the top right corner of the course there is a "Current Grade" and a "Course Grade." The Current Grade shows only the average of all assignments that the student has completed so far.
Final course grades reflect achievement of course goals. The grade indicates "what" a student knows rather than how well he or she has performed relative to the reference group. Students do not jeopardize their own grade if they help another student with course work.
Class Description: PLATO is an online credit recovery class designed to help students earn credits that they may have previously missed. Earning these credits will help them stay on track for graduation. Students are able to work on PLATO during class and also log on at home.
