D, F, and Withdrawal“DFW” in the world of higher education stands for grades of D, F, and Withdrawal.
The nine-year average is about 9.6% for first semester (General Chemistry 1) and about 4.9% for second semester (General Chemistry 2). Specifically, the DWF rate is the percentage of students who earned a grade of D, F, W, or AU audit divided by the number of students enrolled at the end of the “add/drop” period.
The UWM evaluation referenced earlier includes suggestions for improving DFWI rates: focus on reaching more students individually, point struggling students to campus resources, offer more office hours, and improve course accessibility.
