Where can I learn to weave in the UK?

We run a variety of textile workshops and classes here at the Handweavers Studio & Gallery in London. Our workshops regularly cover techniques of hand weaving on shaft and rigid heddle looms, and hand spinning yarn.

Starting out with weaving and loom basics, this class is perfect for new weavers. Learn how to set up your loom, keep your sides straight, correctly start and stop your yarn, and that is only the beginning! Develop the skills to weave tapestry such as (but not limited to) shape building, color blending, and eccentric weft.

However during the year you will also find a range of other techniques appearing in our programme; such as tapestry weaving, tassel making, dyeing, macrame - and much more - workshops vary in length and skill level.

Yarn Spinning Classes

In our Introduction to Spinning workshop (repeated regularly through the year) you will learn how to use a drop spindle and a spinning wheel; it is suitable for beginners and refreshers.

Loom Weaving Classes

Our four day weaving workshop, Introduction to Weaving is suitable for beginners and refreshers, is repeated regularly throughout the year.

Tapestry Classes

In our single afternoon Modern Tapestry class you will learn how to set up a frame loom and how to weave a range of basic tapestry techniques. As you learn you will create a small wall hanging to take home - this is an ideal class for friends and family members to do together.

Weekly Weaving Classes

These mixed ability classes, organised into three 10 week terms per year - autumn, spring and summer - are held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday evenings with morning and afternoon classes on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

Spinning Weaving and Rug-making Courses - 1 and 2 day

Learn the ancient crafts of Spinning, Weaving and rug-making with wool. You will learn all the traditional skills to transform the fibre from the sheep you can see in the fields into stunning hand-made yarn and textiles using ancient techniques and time-honoured equipment

Learn to spin

Using a traditional spinning wheel and Herdwick fleece you will learn how to create your own yarn for use in your own crafts. Starting with the raw fleece, you will find out how to prepare the fibres for spinning.

Improvers spinning- fancy yarns

This is a course for people who have completed the Learn to Spin course or are already spinners and want to move to the next level to create a range of texture and colour within their yarns. Learn to spin your yarn fat or superthin, knoppy, wrapped or with pigtails. Create a smooth crepe or slub yarn and experiment with colour.

Peg loom weaving

The most basic of weaving techniques with amazing results to create both square and round mats in 2 days using natural wool. You will begin by preparing the fibres for weaving and learn how to wash and straighten the fibres using a drum carder to create “Batts” and “Rovings” and blends for colour and fibre mixing.

Hooked sheep mats

You will be learning the little known art of Locker Hooking to create a stunning place mat. The method is similar to that used to make traditional hooked rugs and but uses a specially designed crochet hook-style needle threaded with linen to fix the design in place.

Herdwick Discovery Week: From Fleece to Fireside

The Herdwick Discovery week is a 5 day course, immersing you in all the traditional processes required to turn a fleece from the back of the sheep into a handmade heirloom rug.

Weft-Faced: Tapestry Techniques & Beyond

Learn traditional tapestry techniques including multiple joining techniques, color blending, shape construction, eccentric weft, pick-and-pick, soumak, rya, and inlay. Most techniques discussed will include multiple options to best suit your weaving style.

2 Selvedge Frame Weaving

Learn to set up a simple frame loom for a weaving with 2 finished sides. This method can be used on any frame and is perfect for on the go weaving. Planning your 2 selvedge weaving will also be discussed. We will go over how to finish off your remaining 2 sides with options for multiple warp edge techniques as well as weft end finishing.

4 Selvedge Frame Weaving

Learn to set up a simple frame loom for a weaving with 4 finished sides. This method can be used on any frame and is perfect for on the go weaving. 4 Selvedge weaving is ideal for those who don’t want to deal with finishing off their warp ends and prefer a clean edge. Planning your 4 selvedge weaving and weft end finishing will be discussed.

Frame Weaving

Learn to weave on a portable frame loom. We will introduce a range of warping techniques, with an emphasis on experimental weaving. We will also explore color striping, blending, basic shape construction, eccentric weft, and rya knots. You will construct your own frame loom, which you can keep for future projects!

Embroidery Weaving

Explore the possibilities of the embroidery stitch in order to create shaped weavings. We will learn three weaving stitch variations to create a sampler and take what we have learned to design and finish an embroidery weaving on canvas.

Beginner Rigid Heddle Weaving

Explore weaving with this beginner rigid heddle weaving class. Learn the basics of setting up your loom and how to keep your sides from pulling in. You will finish the class with a beautiful plain weave scarf that is ready to wear. Don’t let the term “plain weave” fool you though – there is nothing plain about it!

Rigid Heddle Weaving With Pick-up Patterns

Are you ready to move beyond plain weave? Further your rigid heddle weaving skills by creating a scarf using a pick-up pattern! Pick-up sticks allow you to easily extend the capabilities of your rigid heddle loom without adding a second heddle. Weaving time outside of class is required.
