Drops and Withdrawals: Electronic "withdrawals" from individual courses within the drop period are done by the student and the course disappears from the transcript. This process is identified as Drop. The tuition refund rules apply (see Bursar's webpage). "Withdrawals" from courses after the drop period are identified as Graduate Withdrawal.

three coursesCourse Withdrawal (“W” grade) is a policy whereby you can withdraw from three courses (regardless of the number of credit hours) during your academic career at Virginia Tech. Course Withdrawal is not available until after the normal six-week drop deadline date for a semester.
Under the pass/fail system students are allowed to take ten percent of the total number of credits required in their degree program on a pass/fail basis. The number of credits allowed under the pass/fail system is based on the course work completed at Virginia Tech.
Once the term has started, students are not able to simply drop or “withdraw” from all of their classes. Virginia Tech policy states that a student must resign. This can be done using the University Registrar's Student Resignation / Withdrawal Form. These cases are commonly referred to as “official resignations.”
Withdrawing is not the same thing as dropping a class early in the semester. When a student drops a class, it disappears from their schedule. After the “drop/add” period, a student may still have the option to Withdraw. Withdrawal usually means the course remains on the transcript with a “W” as a grade.
All students, regardless of level, may not drop their last course. Students must complete a university Student Resignation Form to drop all courses. Your form may be mailed, physically dropped off by the student, or emailed to registrar@vt.edu.
A "D-" is a failing grade under the P/F option. The "P" or "F" is recorded on the student's transcript and credit is given if the course is passed. If the course is failed, the "F" is considered equivalent to an "F" received under the "A-F" grading system and is included in calculation of the GPA.

Repeated Courses: A student may not repeat courses in order to improve his or her grade average where a grade of "C or higher has been earned.

Computer science majors must take at least one course from an approved list of capstone courses.
Any Computer Science 3/4/5000-level course that is not otherwise used to fulfill a Computer Science requirement can be used as a technical elective.
Core Curriculum. The general education program (core curriculum) at Virginia Tech exposes every student to a wide range of disciplines across the university. All Virginia Tech students take classes in the core curriculum. The core curriculum that a student follows is based on their date of entry to Virginia Tech.
A student must have received credit for at least 30 hours to be classified as a sophomore, at least 60 hours to be classified as a junior, and at least 90 hours to be classified as a senior. These hours include any hours passed at Virginia Tech, Advanced Standing, Advanced Placement credit, Dual Enrollment, International Baccalaureate credit, and transfer credit.
You are encouraged to consider participating in the University Cooperative Education/Internship Program. This program allows students to gain practical, on-the-job work experience in their field. A co-op or internship will involve one or more semesters or summers of work during your academic career. Students must develop learning objectives prior to beginning a work assignment.
Final examinations are held at the close of each term according to a schedule established by the university. An instructor may not change the date or time of a final exam without the approval of the dean of the college. Students may request permission from their college dean to reschedule a final exam if they have conflicting exams or if they have three final exams in 24 hours. Otherwise, permission to reschedule a final exam is granted by the dean only in very unusual circumstances. Deferred final exams may be authorized only by the student's academic dean or by the Office of Student Health Services.

Federal law that deals with the release and access to a student’s educational records. The law requires that students give authorization to the university prior to release of any academic record information (grades, class schedule, etc.) to a third party, including parents. Students may complete an online form in Hokie SPA to provide access to parents or guardians.
Students have two GPAs (Grade Point Average) which are tracked at the university: overall GPA and in-major GPA. Both must be at least 2.0000 in order to graduate. Overall GPA is the grade point average earned on all courses taken at the university.

Computer science is an incredibly diverse and dynamic field and there are many career paths that computer science graduates pursue . Even as students, computer science majors may choose from a wide range of junior and senior-level electives. In order to advise students as they navigate all these choices, the Computer Science Department offers advisory tracks . Each track identifies a set of elective courses organized around a particular theme or sub-topic in computer science. Completing a track is not a requirement for graduation, but it allows a student to focus their undergraduate studies in an area of particular interest or prepares them for a particular career or graduate school option. Our current tracks provide broad coverage of computer science topics and reflect the particular strengths and interests of Virginia Tech's computer science faculty.
The Department of Computer Science also offers a Minor in Human-Computer Interaction. This minor is intended for both current CS majors and for students who are pursuing other majors but wish to add a supplemental focus on HCI. The minor consists of 18 credits spread over 6 courses:

Pass/Fail hours do not count toward Dean’s list eligibility and summer sessions are not included in Dean’s list eligibility.
