MC = Major Course This is the program that the majority of VIPKID students use. So far, there are six levels.
One of the world's largest online education platforms, VIPKid, has ceased providing tutoring to children in China as a result of Chinese government reforms.
After passing the mock class and before signing your contract, VIPKID will ask that you submit information to take a background check. It takes approximately 7-10 days for VIPKID to assess your submitted documents (proof of degree) and background check. If you pass this stage, you'll be ready to teach!
GoGoKid was among the first to go out of business. Yet, one Chinese firm, VIPKid, which according to its website has over 70,000 American and Canadian teachers, is still in business.
This company is no longer hiring online teachers due to recent changes in China. However, you can choose to look at the helpful links below instead: List of Non-Chinese Online ESL Companies – featuring companies such as, Cambly.
Is VIPKid Still Hiring? Yes, as of December 2021, VIPKid is still hiring new teachers (except for applicants from the states of California, Washington, and New York). However, the landscape has changed due to changes in China that have forced out all private/non-Chinese-funded tutoring companies.
Unfortunately, no: you must have a Bachelor's degree and degree certificate to apply to VIPKid. In the first stage of your application (the basic info form), you must check a box saying you have a Bachelor's or higher in the initial basic info form. In the final stage, you must then upload your degree certificate.
Since classes are 25-minutes each, you can earn the equivalent of $14-18 per hour plus incentives (see next). From teaching more classes to referrals, there are lots of opportunities to earn extra. In general, with incentives, a teacher can earn the equivalent of $14-22 per hour with VIPKid.
As of 2020, VIPKID can no longer hire teachers from California and as of 2021, they cannot hire teachers from Washington State or New York due to state laws restricting independent contractors.
In 2021, VIPKID requires that teachers are native English speakers with the ability to work in the USA or Canada, excluding California. Teachers must have a bachelor's degree in any subject and at least 2 years of experience working with children in some capacity. Teachers will also need to pass a background check.
Online education giant VIPKid, a Beijing-based tutoring platform that has raised $1.1 billion in capital since its founding and was at one point valued at over $3 billion, will end its flagship education program in China by early next month.
SHANGHAI, Sept 8 (Reuters) - China on Wednesday banned private tutors from giving classes online or in unregistered venues such as residential buildings, hotels and coffee shops, ramping up its effort to stamp out all for-profit tutoring.
Major course certifications are the most common VIPKID certifications and classes. A major course class refers to classes WITHOUT any specific focus (i.e grammar, phonics, etc). If you’re a new teacher with VIPKID, I highly recommend getting as many major course certifications as you can.
Certifications make the VIPKID world go ’round. Earning as many certifications as possible can help you gain more students and increase your booking rate. On the other hand, certifications can also help you connect with students that you feel comfortable teaching.
Initially, VIPKID teachers are given two certifications: either levels 2 & 3 or levels 4 & 5. You can choose between these options when preparing for your mock class.
They tend to be a bit older than PreVIP students, ranging in age from 5 to 8.
During my first two contracts with VIPKID, I didn’t even know level 7 existed. Level 7 is the highest level on the VIPKID platform and it’s the highest certification you can get as a teacher.
As soon as you sign your contract, you’ll be able to earn more certifications. Do this by navigating to your “Resources” tab and clicking on “Certifications” in the drop-down menu. Once in the Certification Center, you’ll be able to access many certifications.
Level 7 is simply a continuation of level 6. This level expands further on reading materials, advanced vocabulary terms, and conversation, but ultimately it’s not much of a change from level 6. The student should have control of the conversation and will be doing the majority of the talking.
What Are The VIPKid Hiring Requirements? 1 A Bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited university 2 Eligible to work in the United States (excluding CA, NY & WA state residents) or Canada 3 Two years teaching “experience” (mentoring, tutoring, coaching, babysitting, parenting)* 4 Fluent in English 5 TEFL or TESOL Certification** 6 Pass background check
VIPKid requires their teachers to have either a United States or Canadian citizenship OR the ability to work within the United States or Canada via green card or temporary work visa.
Actually, VIPKid isn’t the only online education company in China to be affected by this new government-enforced requirement. From my understanding/research, it’s now mandated that ALL online teaching companies who teach Chinese students must employ teachers who have a TEFL or TESOL certification.
1. You’ll be teaching online so that means that you definitely need a computer or laptop. Due to some techy stuff in regards to VIPKid’s application platform, your computer or laptop must run on an updated Windows or Mac Operating System.
Yes, as of 2021, VIPKid is still hiring new teachers ( except for applicants from the states of California, Washington, and New York).
MC stands for “major course”; it does not stand for “master class.” Once you are out of “trial jail,” most of the classes you will teach will be MC classes. This is the program that the majority of VIPKID students use. So far, there are six levels. Level Seven is just starting beta testing and will be out in the next couple of months. It is invite only and has its own special set of requirements. Also, this past month, VIPKID started rolling out interactive classes for Level Two. If it’s an interactive class, it will actually say “interactive” next to the lesson name.
Every once in a blue moon, you will see C1 listed in the course code. C1 stands for the old, or original, curriculum. Most students have transitioned to the new (MC) curriculum, but there are a few rare exceptions. I have taught over 1,300 classes and have only taught two C1 classes. I am very thankful for that, too. The C1 classes are a bit rough, and VIPKID vastly improved the curriculum by creating the MC classes.
Last summer, in addition to the summer camp classes, VIPKID started offering TOEFL classes for intermediate and high level students. What exactly is the TOEFL? Well, I’m glad you asked.
VIPKID lessons are one-on-one with a student in China and all VIPKID lesson planning is done for you. There is minimal prep work and grading – all you have to bring is a smile, energy, and props for the lesson. For each student you teach, you get access to their lesson 24 hours in advance to prepare.
VIPKID is an English learning platform based in China that has thousands of teachers and students. The VIPKID Education Program uses the flipped classroom model. The student watches videos and completes assignments, then have a 25 minute class in real-time with an English-speaking teacher.
There are time slots for every hour that VIPKID is open, which is 8:30 am – 10:00 pm Beijing Time every day of the week. (If you’re in the East Coast Time Zone, this is 8:30 pm – 10:00 am Eastern). Click the time slots you want to open in the calendar and they will become available for parents to book.
The lessons in VIPKID are 25 minutes long and most PPTs are 26-28 slides, so we move at a rate of just under one minute per slide. It’s okay to go a few minutes over when teaching (ending anywhere between 25-minutes and 28-minutes is acceptable) but I never end class early.
Regular VIPKID classes can be booked up to 24 hours in advance. You have the option of opening classes “Short Notice.”. Short notice classes can be booked up to one hour in advance. If a student books a “Short Notice” time spot with you 24 hours – 1 hour before the class start time, you’ll get a $2 bonus.
For each 25-minute class, VIPKID teachers earn a base rate of $7-$9. On top of that, teachers can earn a service fee depending on how many classes they have taught with VIPKID in total and how many classes they have taught in a particular month.
They will choose the time slots they prefer and book them, usually 1-2 weeks in advance. VIPKID will then provide you with information about your upcoming lesson and student. You will receive the lesson materials and teaching tips in advance so you can prepare.
The last step in the VIPKID application process will be finalizing your position with VIPKID. This includes uploading documents (proof of Bachelor’s degree), passing a background check, completing the TESOL course, and signing the contract.
Interview. The VIPKID interview is NOT what you might be thinking. This interview is nothing like other job interviews, so there is no need to spend a lot of time practicing and prepping for it. Basically, VIPKID is looking for three main objectives: your name, degree, and experience with children.
The background check step is very easy. You must give VIPKID permission to run a background check on you and it shouldn’t take more than a few days to hear back.
You have two choices: 1. The lower level (levels 2 & 3) 2. The intermediate level (levels 4 & 5) I recommend choosing the lower level mock class because these are the classes that are in the highest demand.
While it isn’t a make or break issue, you should practice your timing and be right around 10 minutes for each lesson.
Update: due to the impact of the 2020 crisis, VIPKID has been quite understaffed. They are not currently offering live interviews and demos. This part of the application process can only be completed via the VIPKID app on your phone.
The felony was NOT related to children in any way, however, VIPKID still rejected her application during this part of the process. In other words, if you have a felony, I wouldn’t consider applying for VIPKID.
So, you’re ready to start working online and want to know if VIPKID is worth it, right?
VIPKID is an online English teaching platform that hires native English speakers to teach students in China.
This is where the not-so-fun reality of teaching with VIPKID comes in. It is something that has vastly changed my perspective around using VIPKID as a side hustle.
I told you guys I would keep it real, and this is where I have struggled the most with VIPKID.
The VIPKID hiring process is straightforward and moves quickly if you meet all the requirements.
Listen, once you start the interview process, you’ll quickly realize that everyone who works for VIPKID smiles…A LOT.
You need a few simple things for your classroom to meet VIPKID requirements.
