What happens if you fail a unit at uni? If you have failed a unit that’s required for your course or major, you will need to take it again but if it’s an elective, you may be able to choose a different unit to take in it’s place. Normally students are allowed one retake of failed modules. If they don’t pass that time then it’s likely they’ll have to retake the module the following year. This comes at an extra financial cost and it means they won’t be able to progress to the next year of their course.
Final evaluation of a student’s performance in a URI course is done by letter grade. Each graded course becomes part of the student’s permanent academic record (transcript). Final grade reports are made available to all students via the eCampus system.
However, such restrictions are normal and usual and should not pose any interference with completing one’s degree in the usual timeframe. The minimum requirements for transfer to the degree-granting college are the completion of 24 credits at URI and an overall GPA of 2.00.
A student who withdraws from the University after midsemester can receive a final grade only for a course that has an officially specified completion date prior to the date of the withdrawal.
Even if you do fail, you can retake the class and ask for help. Although it will negatively impact your GPA and could affect your financial obligations, you can bounce back. Start by asking for more help and studying differently or harder if you retake the course. Most importantly, don't give up.
GPA is calculated by assigning a number to grades and then averaging them. An A is a four, B a three and so forth, leaving a failing grade as a zero. Therefore, five courses in which you had a B, B, C, A and F would add up to a 2.4 GPA if all the courses were for the same amount of credits.
Undergraduate students may exercise a second grade option by repeating a course in which the student earned a C- or lower. Only courses that fall within the student's first 30 attempted credits taken at the University may be selected for this option.
Academic probation is a warning to students to improve their academic performance. Students on academic probation cannot enroll for more than 15 credits in Fall or Spring, and must obtain their advisor's approval to register or change registration. Dismissal.
The Consequences of Failing a Class A failing grade will likely hurt your GPA (unless you took the course pass/fail), which could jeopardize your financial aid. The failure will end up on your college transcripts and could hurt your chances of getting into graduate school or graduating when you originally planned to.
The original failing grade will show as “R” on your transcript, and the previous failing grade will be removed from your GPA as long as you complete the course retake. However, you will still see your original failing grade on your personal online academic plan and on your individual online grade reports.
Undergraduate students requesting taking a leave of absence from an academic program must do so through their academic dean's office. All requests for a leave of absence require Dean's Office approval. Your leave application may be for no longer than two semesters.

Without written permission of the student's academic dean, the maximum number of credits for which a student may enroll in a semester is: undergraduates – 19 credits; graduate students – 15 credits; graduate assistants and graduate research assistants – 12 credits.
A full-time student may qualify for the Dean's List if he or she has completed 12 or more credits for letter grades which are GPA applicable (A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, and F) and achieved a 3.30 grade point average.
Simply put, academic dismissal means being asked to leave the school because of continued poor academic performance. It doesn't mean your student can never go to college again; it just means they have to put a stop to their education at their current institution for the time being.
The required cumulative quality point average (CQPA) for good academic standing is 2.000 or higher. A cumulative quality point average is a calculation of the average of all grades and all completed credits for all semesters.
