Current UMD students interested in declaring engineering as their major must first complete a specific set of gateway requirements and should then submit a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) application as an internal transfer student.
Students matriculating to UMD in the fall of 2012 or after must also have a 2.0 cumulative GPA in their major courses, minor courses and classes used to satisfy certificate programs. A course taken at UMD in which a grade has been earned may not be repeated via transfer from another institution.
Grading System. Grade point averages (scholastic averages) are computed by dividing the honor points a student has earned by the hours elected. The term grade point average and the cumulative grade point average are computed for each student at the end of each term and become part of the student's official UM-Dearborn academic record.
An applicant also has the option of entering as an Undecided Engineering major and will typically choose a degree program in the first year. Directly admitted freshmen will be subject to an academic review at the end of the semester in which they attain 45 University of Maryland credits.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Students are required to achieve a 2.0 GPA to maintain satisfactory academic progress. A GPA under 2.0 is considered unsatisfactory performance. Students with a GPA under 2.0 will be placed on Academic Probation.
C- or higherUniversity of Maryland students who wish to take a course pass/fail must earn a C- or higher to receive a passing grade, a policy that will continue in the future after being piloted in the spring semester.
Only one course per semester or summer session may be registered under the pass-fail option. No more than 12 semester hours of credit may be taken under the pass-fail option during a student's college career. Students may not choose this option when re-registering for a course.
F - this is a failing grade.
A letter grade of a D is technically considered passing because it not a failure. A D is any percentage between 60-69%, whereas a failure occurs below 60%.
As a result of the binary grading system, GPA is not affected by any pass/fail courses so long as you finish the semester with a passing grade. If passed, the course units will count toward your graduation requirements with no effect on your GPA. If a fail is given, however, your GPA can be harmed severely.
If a student earns a grade of D+, D, D- or F, those grades will be recorded. While the "P" does not have an impact on a student's GPA, grades of D+, D, D- and F will be factored into the GPA. Students will be able to select the pass/fail grading method for up to seven credits with automatic approval.
Students with a cumulative GPA under 2.00 will be placed on Academic Probation. All Students must have a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average across all courses used to satisfy major degree requirements, minor requirements, and undergraduate certificate requirements, respectively.
120 credit hoursCredit Requirements No baccalaureate degree will be awarded in instances where fewer than 120 credit hours have been earned. Many undergraduate curricula at the University of Maryland, College Park, require more than 120 credits.

A failing grade will likely hurt your GPA (unless you took the course pass/fail), which could jeopardize your financial aid. The failure will end up on your college transcripts and could hurt your chances of getting into graduate school or graduating when you originally planned to.
While most colleges consider a D a passing grade for pass/fail courses, some require a C. And pass/fail classes may not count toward major or general education requirements.
