If the course you fail is an elective and you do not want to repeat it, you can choose a different course. To plan your remaining studies after failing a course, use the instructions found via Managing your progression. If you require support beyond this, book an appointment with a Program and Enrolment Adviser in Student Hub.
After that, students who have failed to take the tutorial will receive two more reminders/warnings spread over several weeks, after which, a hold will be placed on their account. In the first email that is sent to students notifying them of the tutorial requirement and deadline, directions for the best way to take the tutorial are given.
Students who complete the tutorial by October 22 nd will be free to register for Winter 2022 classes. Students who do not complete the tutorial by October 22 nd will have a hold placed on their account until the tutorial has been completed.
If you earned a D or F in a class, you can only repeat it for a letter grade. All grades you earn are recorded on your transcript. Generally, the first 16 units of repeated classes for which you received a D, F, or NP won't be used to calculate your cumulative GPA.
Summer Session non-UCSD students are required to take it during the application process. The tutorial must be completed by October 22nd or a hold will be placed on their account. The initial email notifying students of this obligation is sent on Monday of Week 0.
Repetition of Courses (Graduate students must petition and receive approval in advance to repeat a course.) Undergraduate students may repeat a course in which a grade of NP has been awarded for a P/NP or letter grade, if applicable.

You may repeat a maximum of 16 units. The original grade earned remains on the transcript, but will not factor into your GPA if it is successfully repeated later. If a student exceeds 16 units of repeat coursework, future repeated course grades will be averaged together.
Even if you do fail, you can retake the class and ask for help. Although it will negatively impact your GPA and could affect your financial obligations, you can bounce back. Start by asking for more help and studying differently or harder if you retake the course. Most importantly, don't give up.
P/NP and S/U (Pass/ Not Pass and Satisfactory/ Unsatisfactory) show that you've either passed or not passed a class. Classes with P and S grades count toward your unit requirements for a degree but do not apply to your GPA.
For your high school, a D is passing. You can graduate with Ds, but you cannot go to college with Ds. Colleges will give you ZERO credit for the class, just like you got an F.
The first thing you need to be clear about is that retaking classes (in most cases) has a minimal effect on your GPA, because retaken classes don't replace your low grades – they average in with them. That's right: your low grade won't be dropped – the retaken class grade will be added to it and averaged.
Many undergraduates fail a class in college and still go on to graduate. If you're at risk of failing, talk to your professor and meet with an academic advisor. Check your school's policies about retaking courses to remove an F from your transcript. Failing a class is a wake-up call that you may need to make changes.
The Consequences of Failing a Class A failing grade will likely hurt your GPA (unless you took the course pass/fail), which could jeopardize your financial aid. The failure will end up on your college transcripts and could hurt your chances of getting into graduate school or graduating when you originally planned to.
In many schools, if a student retakes a course, the most recent grade will replace the lower grade in the student's GPA. The earlier, lower grade will remain on the transcript, but will not be included in the GPA. Some schools, however, average the two grades and include the averaged grade in the GPA.
Failing & Then Re-Taking a Class Croskey notes that dropping a class is better than withdrawing, but withdrawing is better than failing. “A failing grade will lower the student's GPA, which may prevent a student from participating in a particular major that has a GPA requirement,” Croskey says.
Failing a class is not the end of the world, or even of your college experience. It doesn't mean you're stupid, or that you chose the wrong major and won't be able to cut it in the real world. It simply means that you have something to improve on and a goal to work toward in your education.
If a student drops a course after the end of the fourth week of instruction, the registrar will assign a final grade of W to the student for that course. Students may only receive one W per course.
It is the policy of the university to make reasonable efforts to accommodate students having bona fide religious conflicts with scheduled examinations by providing alternative times or methods to take such examinations . If a student anticipates that a scheduled examination will occur at a time at which the student’s religious beliefs prohibit participation in the examination, the student must submit to the instructor a statement describing the nature of the religious conflict and specifying the days and times of conflict.
If the grievance is not resolved to the student’s satisfaction, the student may then attempt to resolve the grievance through written appeal to the department chair or equivalent, who shall attempt to adjudicate the case with the instructor and the student within two weeks. If the grievance still is not resolved to the student’s satisfaction, the student may then attempt to resolve the grievance through written appeal to the provost of the student’s college, or the dean of the Graduate Division, who shall attempt to adjudicate the case with the instructor, the chair, and the student within two weeks. If the grievance is not resolved to the student’s satisfaction by the provost or dean, the student may request consideration of the appeal by the Educational Policy Committee (hereinafter called the Committee) according to the procedures outlined below. This request must be submitted before the last day of instruction of the quarter following the quarter in which the course was taken.
Nonacademic criteria means criteria not directly reflective of academic performance in the course.
If a conflict with the student’s religious beliefs does exist, the instructor will attempt to provide an alternative, equitable examination which does not create undue hardship for the instructor or for the other students in the class.
Final examinations in nonlaboratory courses may not exceed three hours in duration.
For final examinations, the statement must be submitted no later than the end of the second week of instruction of the quarter. For all other examinations, the statement must be submitted to the instructor as soon as possible after a particular examination date is scheduled.
So, this means that while you are suspended, you could take courses at another university or from a community college. If you decide to enroll somewhere else while suspended from UCSD, DO check with your academic advisors beforehand to ensure that you take the appropriate courses for your major or degree.
The academic sanction can range from a failing grade on the assignment, quiz, or exam in question, to a failing grade in the class.
If your question has not been answered, please email [email protected] using the subject line “AIT Question :” followed by a summary of your inquiry.
If you were not suspended for your first violation, it is likely that you'll be suspended for 1-3 quarters for your second violation (even if the second violation is minor).
Students need to complete the tutorial with a score of 100.
Students can print or screen capture their results, but it is not required. The Academic Integrity Office does not review screenshots or use them to verify completion of the tutorial.
Students have a blank instead of a grade while the academic integrity process is going on. This CAN impact your ability to get financial aid if the blank means that you've achieved fewer credits than required. No worries. You can submit an appeal for a one quarter probationary period by using this form. By the end of that probationary period, your case should be resolved and your grade inputted. If you have any other questions about this, do talk to the Financial Aid Office.
