One of my favorite classes was COGS 101C: Language taught by Ben Bergen.
This class was really fun. Kehler is great and you get to learn about binary and other systems. Very cool stuff.
Also, UCSD has a world-class Chinese Studies department. So, if you are thinking about learning some Chinese, UCSD is an excellent place to do so. The breadth and depth of classes available is incredible. Although, you should stay away from " Business Chinese " ( Chin 165A/B/C ); it's kind of a joke.
This class was one of the most engaging courses I've ever taken at UCSD, and I feel like the professor largely contributes to it. Bergen is witty and super engaging, and some of the coolest facts/conversation starters I know are from this class.
There are upper division classes that are great if you're into the subject, not so great if you're, well...not.
The language program at UCSD is absolutely fantastic. Classes are full immersion from day one and all of the teachers are native speakers. I took ASL and Italian through 3 and 2 quarters, respectively, and I loved them.
Modern sequencing technology has revolutionized our ability to detect how genomes vary in space among individuals, populations, and communities, and over time. This course will review methods and concepts in ecological and evolutionary genomics that help us understand these differences, including their relevance to health (human microbiome, cancer evolution), evolutionary history (ancestor reconstruction, human evolution), and the environment (effect of climate change).
Texts from the Hebrew Bible and from Greek epic, history, drama, and philosophy in their cultural context. Revelle students must take course for letter grade.
