120 creditsThe requirements for graduation, and the rationale for curricular requirements, are as follows. 1) A minimum of 120 credits (128-136 for Engineering majors), at least 45 of which must be earned in residence.
Maximum load: Undergraduate students may apply for no more than 17 credits per semester which includes fall, spring and summer (all sessions).
Students in their first semester at UMass are NOT eligible for a credit overload. When to Use This Form: Fall/Spring: If you wish to take more than 19 credits. Summer: If you wish to take more than 16 credits total for the term, or 8 credits in any session.
Course Repeat Petition A course may be repeated a second time, for a total of three times, only with prior permission of the academic dean of the school or college in which the student is enrolled.
There is no limit to the number of courses a student is allowed to retake. (This has changed.) A student might be allowed to retake a class a second time (i.e., enroll in the class for a third time). Students need the permission of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs for a second retake.
It depends on how many quality points they earn for each grade. If the D is in a 1-credit-hour course, the student will earn a 3.76 GPA. If the A is in a 1-credit-hour course, they will earn a 3.3 GPA. Same grades, same total number of credit hours, but different weights based on the credit hours of the course.
Schools can't deny a diploma to qualified graduates arbitrarily or under rules that are not reasonable. If a student successfully finished the academic requirements and sat for final exams, courts generally find it unfair for schools to withhold a high school diploma for last-minute disciplinary problems.
17 creditsCan I exceed my credit limit? Students are eligible to take up to 17 credits per semester. Credit overloads are normally only allowed for students whose overall GPA is at least 3.0 or whose most recent regular semester GPA is at least 3.5.
Students whose cumulative average is 2.000 or above, but whose semester average is less than 2.000, will be sent a warning indicating that they should consult with their academic dean. C. Academic Probation. Students whose cumulative average falls below 2.000 will be placed on Academic Probation.

You must maintain full-time enrollment at your host institution or program. UMass considers 12 credits to be full-time enrollment for undergraduates and 9 credits for graduates. Academic approval is required for credit earned abroad to count toward specific degree requirements.
The equivalent of a C- or better is required for any courses taken abroad for specific graduation requirements in a major , minor, certificate or general education. Students will receive UMass elective credits for any grades below a C- but these cannot be used toward specific graduation requirements. Grading scales vary across countries and institutions. Make sure you understand the grading system and UMass interpretation of grades/credits toward your UMass degree and record.
Courses abroad must be taken for a letter grade; they cannot be taken pass/fail. Abroad grades and credits will be converted into UMass equivalencies and the grades will appear on your UMass transcript with course titles but they will not be averaged into your GPA, with the exception of UMass Amherst faculty-taught programs.
UMass credit will only be granted for foreign language courses taken abroad at or above the course level already completed at UMass. Credit will not be awarded for courses at a level lower than that already received at UMass or the 5-Colleges (i.e. if you received credit for SPAN203, you may not earn credit abroad for any 100-level equivalent Spanish language course). Repeated courses follow the repeat policy. We cannot guarantee placement in specific levels. International Studies Abroad (ISA): ISA provides students opportunities to study abroad in a variety of locations at an affordable price. ISA aims to maximize participants' learning abroad, and provide support and guidance before, during and after their time abroad. ISA's flagship programs are in Spain and Latin America, but they also have programs in a total of 74 cities and 28 countries in Europe, South America, Asia, Oceania, Middle East, and Africa.
Oxford Study Abroad Programme (OSAP): OSAP places strong students in colleges of Oxford University. Oxford is the oldest English-speaking university in the world, and is considered to be one of the two or three best universities and/or colleges in the world. The program is offered for UMass Boston students 4 times a year, including summers. The Oxford Study Abroad Program is multi-disciplinary & features tutorials (one-on-one instruction ).

Semester or Year-long: Spend a full semester or academic year abroad. Minimum credits to be taken for a semester is 12 US credits. Summer Programs**: Earn credits over summer break. Typical programs are between 3-6 weeks and offer between 3-6 credits. Winter (J-Term) Programs**: Earn credits over winter break.
All students participating on Reciprocal Exchange, Affiliate, and Alternate Study Abroad Provider Programs or directly enrolling are required to pay a $100 fee . This fee, along with UMass Boston required forms and documents will assure the following: maintenance of fulltime UMass student status while on approved program abroad; WISER remains active; Financial aid can be applied to overseas program; pre-approval of courses toward the UMass degree program; transcript processing; credits will be interpreted and applied to the UMass transcript upon return. In addition, students are provided with ongoing advising throughout the process. Pre-departure orientations are offered the semester before studying abroad. All UMass Boston students are also covered by UMass International Travel & Emergency Insurance while participating on an approved, overseas program. This fee is NON-REFUNDABLE.
Transfer students are eligible after they have successfully completed one semester of full-time study at UMass Boston.
Obtain a signature from the Department Chair of your major at UMass Boston, if you are taking courses in your major and Miguel directs you to seek approval from your department.
Browse course offerings from the university/provider. For semester programs choose a minimum of 12 US credits (recommended to choose 2-3 back up courses) and fill out the form with the name of the courses. For summer and winter choose a few courses to have approved as back ups options as well.
Many programs in non-English speaking countries require at least two academic semesters of the language spoken in the host country or region. Language acquisition programs accept students at any level. There are also many opportunities to study in countries where the native language is English, or courses are offered in English.
Programs that carry a U.S. accreditation qualify for credit transfer to UMass Boston. Most study abroad programs are sponsored by an American university and therefore carry that institution's accreditation.
Credits are awarded to your academic record at UMass Boston, but won't affect your GPA.
The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) offers a 10-week summer session to its Pre Undergraduate and Pre Master’s international students. These students are admitted into a Bachelor’s or Master’s program with the condition of a preparatory semester (s) which could encompass the summer session.
The usual course load for full-time graduate students is 9 credits/semester. Depending upon the program requirements and abilities of the student, individuals may carry more than 9 credits each semester. However, the absolute maximum number of total credits (combined undergraduate and graduate) for which a graduate student will be allowed to register is 18 credits/semester. The maximum number of thesis or dissertation credits for which a student may enroll in any semester is nine credits.
At no time may grades computed in an undergraduate GPA be used toward a graduate GPA.
For students who completed Math 132 prior to Fall 2021 and earned a grade of C or better on the first try, the 4 credits for Math 131 will be awarded (unless they have already received credit for another Calculus I class). To receive this credit, the student will need to email Jacob Lagerstrom after receiving the final grade in Math 132.
Generally, any second course in calculus that is for engineers and math majors, that covers techniques of integration (integration by parts, trig substitution, etc), and that fully covers infinite series (including convergence questions, power series and their convergence, Taylor series) is likely to be approved .
