Choose to split your activity into 2 or 3 pieces and the activity will be automatically divided into equal portions based on time. You can always go back and split part of one activity again if you need to make more than 3 splits.

The distance for this activity was inflated because each 'zig' and 'zag' of the GPS track had to be accounted for with a straight line connecting them. Strava does some smoothing to compensate for bad data but some cases are so extreme that we aren't able to provide a realistic estimate of your distance.Jan 3, 2022

Strava always uses GPS data to calculate average and total distance, even if you use a speed sensor. One of the reasons Strava does this is that a speed sensor can give false readings if you set the wheel circumference incorrectly.

Split is a running and racing term that means the time that it takes to complete a specific distance. Your device may have simply lost a connection to GPS satellites and did not record any data. Your Strava activity may be missing a map, show a straight line connecting your start and endpoints, or was automatically tagged as an indoor activity. Kudos and comments will be preserved on the first part of the activity only. If you split at the wrong spot and need to start over, you will lose kudos and comments.
Strava can automatically split most multi-sport fit files from devices such as the 310xt, 910xt, or the 920xt. When you upload a multi-sport fit file, Strava's file parser will separate it into multiple activities during the upload process. If you uploaded a multi-sport file and it wasn't automatically split, it's likely your device does not follow conventional multi-sport formatting or the file is not in FIT format. If this is the case, you can use our activity split tool or you can export the individual .tcx files from Garmin Connect, and upload those to Strava.

To ‘record your first activity’, you’ll want to connect a GPS running watch to Strava. In the screenshot above, and on your dashboard, you’ll see “Connect Device” in the orange clickable box. Hit that.
If you ran with someone else who has Strava and you’re connected on the platform, if they upload their run Strava will connect your activities and show other users that you ran together. See my screenshot below as an example:

Strava is truly handy to see all your stats in one place, and quickly. For example, your goals. You can set mileage/km goals to hit weekly too: You can also average stats (generally not always accurate, don’t count a Strava PR as an actual PR) – only real physical race results are PRs or PBs.
The software recognizes any of your friends on Facebook that are already using Strava. Strava will then suggest that you follow your friends on the platform to get your Strava profile and network up and running (pun intended).

Every company and platform goes through growing pains, and in many ways, it seems Stra va is going through similar pains. However, most companies tend to struggle with meeting demand, finding quality employees, or matching competitors. Strava, for all its recent problems – doesn’t really seem to be struggling with any of those issues.
Effective July 1st, Strava disabled access for 3rd party apps to connect to Strava data for the vast majority of 3rd party apps on the market. What are 3rd party apps? Simply put, they are ones developed by other companies to interact with Strava services. For example, the ability for Wahoo Fitness to upload directly to Strava, or for various Android apps to upload to Strava. Applications do this through what’s called an API (Application Programming Interface), or essentially a way to communicate with Strava as a site from a programming standpoint. Virtually every technology platform on earth has API’s (or similar methods) to connect to them, be it Strava, Garmin, Apple, or Microsoft. Everyone. The degree to which API’s are offered varies from company to company.
While Strava didn’t previously offer this capability natively, other 3rd parties did . This is somewhat similar to how it works on Garmin Connect, where Garmin Connect doesn’t offer bulk export, but does allow applications to do it for users with permission.
One surefire way of looking fast on a Strava ride - at least until someone clicks on the route profile - is to start at the top of a big hill, ride down it, ride around a bit, and then conveniently stop the GPS computer before going back up the hill again.
Receiving a dreaded 'Uh oh' email from Strava means that you have lost one of your KOM/QOMs. You know that you pushed it to the absolute limit to get that KOM, and so the news that someone beat your time by three minutes is as welcome as a double puncture on a wet day. A click on the link to their ride reveals a succession of KOMs and an average speed of 32mph after a visit to a car park.
